Dinosaur here - update on DS3

Just a quick update - DS3 (2.8 months) in the midst of assessment process for ASD.

Had visit from SALT and portage worker yesterday and they were talking as if it was absolutely certain that he would get a statement for nursery!!! And they are employed by the Learning Trust, which is the LEA in this area and administers SEN amongst other things.

So my conclusion is that they think my DS3 is pretty far along the spectrum.

Anyone like to comment?

How do you feel about it?

My dd got a statement at 3 and has mild asd but does have quite a significant language disorder and Adhd.

I am so pleased that your ds is getting the help he needs as I truly believe early intervention is the key.

How do you feel Dino? I wanted to say that I noticed that when I said hello to him and ruffled his hair he looked at me and gave me a little smile before going a bit shy. He's very sweet.
Is it the not talking thing that is the key thing at the moment.

I honestly don't know whether it means something. I remember when ds2 was first being assessed and I was asked if I would like him to go to an SN nursery when he got older. It surprised me as ds2 is at the milder end of the spectrum. Ds1 was much further along the spectrum at that age but it was almost taken as a given that he would be going to mainstream.

Here there has been a lot of improvement over the past couple of years wrt early intervention and specialist help. Ds2 has had ten times as much help as ds1 had. Is it possible that your area is the same?

agree autism support is growing.

MrsPhilipGlenister · 15/03/2007 22:22

Thanks everyone. BH, I definitely agree that early intervention is key!

Coppertop, and Aloha, it is certainly the case here that there is a lot more support available. Portage lady yesterday was going on about a special needs nursery called Cosmo in De Beauvoir which I'd never even heard of previously.

Aloha, I'm glad DS3 gave you a little smile before he conked out on Sunday!

He gave me a little smile too! What a cutie, as were both his brothers.

I honestly don't think you can usually tell how far a 2 year old is along the spectrum, tbh. It's great that you and he are getting proper support though.

I hadn't seen him smile before as the last time I met him he was heavily engrossed in Teletubbies, I think and it was lovely to see his little grin. Very direct eye contact, no worries about physical touch and a sweet spontaneous smile. And then the Big Sleep!

How was your journey home?

MrsPhilipGlenister · 15/03/2007 22:46

Aw, you're making me well up here! (Have had a couple of glasses of wine, can you tell?!)

His eye contact has been loads better since we switched to goats' milk, on Jimjams' recommendation.

Journey home was brilliant, actually - we were home by about 3.40 p.m. in time for a big Monopoly marathon.

I actually mentioned how great his response was was to dh when I got home! I know Jimjams got a good result with goats milk. I actually started a thread to ask how anyone manages to play board games with older kids with a toddler around, so I envy you that. I'm sure ds would like to play much more often.
Anyway, have we got a date yet?
