I am new here .. Here is my suitation

My daughther failed her 2year old tests that all children take november 2006 she was retested a few weeks ago after 3 months at a playgroup yet again she failed. I expressed concern about her behavouir as she cannot talk its all uhh oahhh and looking blank the health vistor listened and refered her for a hearing test and sight test and for speech and language theropy .I had the letter the other day telling me there is a 9 months wait plus which i find quiet upsetting as my daughter will be over 3 before she gets any kind of help.

what can i do in the meantime?
she is very hard to look after she takes my energy you cant tell what she wants most of the time she wont be still get violent sometimes she has no sense of understanding if u say mummy loves u she stares at u blank i find it diffulacult to wallk her as she just runs off in any direction and has no sense of the danger around her i fear she would run into the road if she wasnt in a buggy walking anywhere just isnt an option as it take 30 mins to walk 10 meter its a nighmare

sorry i could go on all day just wondered is this how u all started in getting help with your children?#

thanks jo xxxx

Can your daughter imitate? She might learn some makaton while waiting but you're probably doing all that you can. I go with Socci here, she needs to see a paediatrician not wait for services accessed through the health visitor. Paeds come with a team of SALT, physio, OT's etc so it should be quicker.
Gp to your GP and exagerate and ask for a refferal right now.
My 3rd child was similar and the HV said he was autistic which made my heart freeze and no 2 is. While waiting I took him to a homeopath and the treatment made his personality appear in his eyes (co-incidence or not, I'lll never know). The follwoig week he saw a developmental psychiatrist. He'd never spoekn and was 3. Little monster walked in said 'hello lady' and hasn't stopped talking yet (he's now 11). no 2 has Aspergers but no 3 is now fine despite all the worry.
To get anything done in the NHS you have to make a fuss, all the SALT's direct, call the Cheif Executive etc

Is that a 9mth wait for a SALT assessment or for actual therapy? Either way it is still too long. I know that some people have contacted the SALT office directly and asked for any cancellations that might come up. I remember our SALT telling me that we were one of very few families who actually bothered to turn up for every appointment so presumably this may happen in other areas too.

I agree that your dd should have a full assessment by a Paed. I would ask your HV or GP for a referral.

Good luck.

Just thibnking about alternative remedies, was there a traumatic birth? Cranial Therapy can help with that.

Just had a letter this morning about SALT referral for dd and it will take 15 weeks, still not good but heaps better than 9 months.

beckybrastraps · 15/03/2007 11:20

My dd was referred at 2.6 and was seen for an initial assessment within 6 weeks. She was then put on the waiting list proper and that will be 8-9 months apparently. But we did at leastr see the SALT and get some advice.

We were advised to do leads of repetition. Dolls tea parties: 'would you like some more cake, cake, more cake', putting on shoes: 'where are dd's shoes, are those your shoes, lets put on your shoes, here is one shoe, and another shoe' - that sort of thing.

My dd also didn't speak at all at 2. By 2.6, she had some words but was very, very unclear. Now (3) she is improving every day . I hope things move more quickly for you.

Not your fault AT ALL. Just shows what a good Mum you are to be so worried. Once you have had a full assesment you will know where you stand, scarey but once you know what you are dealing with you can start the process of helping dd realise her full potential. Hopefully you will be guided in ways of dealing with dd's problem areas and that will make life nuch more bearable hopefully.
