It is very common and may just last a few months. Growing up normally cures it. In the mean time, gromits may help but if it is long lasting then hearing aids may be preferred.

There's something called otovent which is worth a try and without any downsides (unlike grommets)

No I haven't as DD (who has glue ear) is too young, but read good things about it on here.

Grommets involves a GA, you have to be careful about getting water in the ear, can fall out a lot, can become a site for infection, etc. They are problem free for most kids however, I'm not anti grommets, just saying it's worth trying something else (pretty cheap and over the counter) first?

here is the NICE guidance on it - seems to be quite effective and says no adverse effects.

I think I read about it here - website of a paediatric ENT.

Aren't we supposed to pop our ears any more? Didn't know that!

our cure were grommets at well.

downsides: it is done under general anesthetic (though the surgery itself is very short and usually done as a day case). We were told not to go swimming as water can get into the middle ear but there appears to be conflicting information.

For us the grommets worked well. no issues as all and they lasted 18 months in each ear. There weren't really any downsides.

is it just the hearing or also mid ear infections. If it is only the hearing that is affected, they sometimes offer hearing aid whilst the glue ear dries up.
