Compulsory school swimming

My DS is 10, and has motor and vocal tic disorder. His motor tics are very strong- his arms and legs flail around (he knocked my plate off my knee yesterday!) and his mouth stretches wide open (he's split his lips)
I just don't feel it's fair to force him into this.

He hates swimming anyway, has sensory processing difficulties, and is on the waiting list for an ados assessment. The smell, and the noise, and the getting dressed in a rush are stressful for him- which will lead to more tics.

I know it's 'compulsory' but I'm more than happy to book him some 1-1 lessons. Can it really be enforced at school if I refuse permission?

He's so anxious about it, which is making life at home really, really hard. (I'm being either shouted at or climbed on Sad )

Would be grateful for any advice.

No it can't be enforced. As a child with SEN he should have a differentiated curriculum for a start, and also activities which cause him stress and harm can be avoided under Equality 2010 too. Stand firm.

Thank you- that's really helpful to know.
I feel like I'm being seen as a nuisance parent, but I just want him to feel safe and comfortable.

Thanks again- going to hold my ground Smile
