Hello

I'm new, I have a ds who is a year old with a rare chromosome abnormality. Its amazing to find this chat room, I'm hoping to learn a lot from all your experience!

I've been looking at the courses the Institute run and read the book (what to do about your brain injured child). It all sounds positive and logical and we're thinking of doing the course they run in Philadelphia. Has anyone done it? I'd love to know whether anyone's had any good results - the web address is iahp.org if anyone's interested in having a look.

Many thanks!

Hi FioFio

No, I'm in West London! Thought I might get adventurous and try it anyway - its £500 for the course for the week and they teach the parents to do an early intervention programme. Sounds in depth but the results they claim look good and if its the difference between him walking and not walking.. I don't know, I'm sceptical but willing to give anything a go if it makes even the slightest improvement...

I've got a telephone interview booked with them in a couple of weeks time. I was reading the posts about them, we may give that a go as well. We're getting some support but I feel the docs have already written him off so I want to get as much info as I can so I can question them as intelligently as possible (wink)

Is BIBIC any good? their website doesn't really have lists of success stories. I sort of got the impression that mild to moderate cerebral palsy kids did well but severe cases were wasting their money.
Any advice on that?

Hello sheeps

My dd is 22mo and also has rare chromo abnormality. I don't know anything about iahp. However, we've been going to Parent and Child sessions at conductive ed (we're based in Midlands). Like Fio, I would reccommend. Our physio / OT have been stunned by some of the improvements in my dd.

Does your ds have low muscle tone? We are also going to the Movement Centre in Oswestry. We have been accepted and funded for a course of targeted training. My dd also has growth issues. She is very tiny - far too small for any standing equipment on NHS (needs to grow 6" first pfff!!). So we are especially chuffed that movement centre are making her a frame. A couple of parents I know locally have really rated it.

There was also an organisation called BIRD someone on here posted about a while ago. I looked into it and thought it looked interesting but not pursuing at the mo cos of all the other stuff going on.

sorry Fio - I'm not very on the ball with these conversations am I?

We go to NICE in Cannon Hill Park, Brum. I understand loads of people travel to there - there was a little lad coming over from Brazil! I find all the staff there so positive - I tend to come away chuffed at all the stuff dd CAN do, rather than thinking of the stuff she can't or isn't doing.

How long did you do CE for?

think its been there for a while. It started here in Brum in the late 80s* and was called the Peto Institute. Not sure how long its been at Cannon Hill - at least 10 years

  • not started started - like Birmingham invented CE(! nah - hp sauce, heavy metal and baltis maybe ) Just when it was first set up here

Sheeps, the Institute have a contact here in the UK. If its the "movement" course you are interested in, (Delacato Method) they bring their people over here once or twice a year. Cost obviously much less, i think its £400.00 for 3 days. See if you can get funding from the Caudwell Trust.

If its the Delacato Method you are interested in, can i suggest you do some reading on it. There isnt much if any peer reviewed research on the method. Anecdotal evidence from parents is kind of slim but the detractors from the method and even some of the parents, say that it is very VERY difficult to carry out, and hard on the family and absolutely no proof that any of it "works", that progress may simply be chalked up to the child's "maturation".

I am telling you this because i got kind of excited about it too, until i started to talking to other people and really investigating the "philosophy" behind the insititue (which is connected, albeit, loosely to the philosophies of Ron Hubbard, Church of Scientology, new age stuffy.

That aside, if you can find out exactly what you will have to do with your child via their methods, you will have a better understanding rather believing what you see on their website. Bibic was associated with these people but they broke away to start their own organisation. If you ask them, they will tell you.

Just please be careful. The amount of work and energy that u will be required to do the exercises and work with your child, via their courses etc, may not be something your family can handle. It is extremely intensive, to the point of manic.

But if thats what you want to do, here is the link for the guy in the UK who brings these people over. He is very hyped up on it and will tell you what you want to hear of course.

www.theautismcentre.co.uk/

P.S. not just talking out of my hat, here. I have read a lot of their books and have talked at length with the contact in the UK, as well as with Bibic about this.

Hi mamadadawahwah

Thanks so much for your message, I really appreciate it. I like the idea of the results (who wouldn't..) but then the idea that you spent 8 hours a day with your child on the floor and then don't have a life sounds to me like they will then be deficient in other areas, it's a tough one. I'll look into your contact and maybe that could be the best introduction rather than going out there which will be a huge expense and logistical nightmare!
