Moving from nursery to mainstream school - ECHP?

My son had a stroke a couple of years ago. He has a mild left side disability and following a recent OT/Physio assessment, we have a report which outlines the exercises he should be doing, and the additional specialist support he needs.

The nursery have been excellent and he has been having 1:1 support with the specific exercises, but having spoken to the SENCO at his new school, she said they were struggling with the fact the school were now being expected to be setting time and staff aside for the exercises OT and Physio set and she didn't believe the school could manage this additional workload. In a nutshell they don't have the funding/staff to be able to do this - and OT/physio resources are stretched in clinics - OT appointments are like gold dust and he has only just managed to get a space on an OT programme for the second time since his stroke.

A friend mentioned an ECHP, but I don't know anything about this. How would I apply? I'm not even sure we would qualify??

Do you know whether your DS will be on the school's SEN register? At the very least it sounds like he should be. Then the school need to make reasonable adjustments for him, and demonstrate how they are supporting him to you.

As hard as it might feel you will probably be starting on a journey now to ensure your DS's needs are met at school. The best schools find a creative way to support even in the face of depleted funds.

It might be worth giving ipsea a ring too for some advice.

I think he will be on the SEN register at the school but nothing confirmed. I've only had a casual conversation with the SENCO so far in the play ground when dropping off my daughter. In the meantime I'll have a look at the link. Thank you again.
