Sorry guys I know this has been done before but I can't find it - probably because I am typing with my eyes half closed lol. Can you describe this to me. DS2 has ASD but from what I understand of ADHD he seems to have this too. I feel up to another battle now lol.

not very experienced in this matter but it does seem that autism and adhd go hand in hand a lot of the time, just judging by other peeps stories i have heard. luckily my ds3 who has aspergers isnt but my friends little boy who is autistic is definately adhd aswell. lets hope its not too much of a fight for you hun. xx

Well what I really need to know is if a child with adhd is constantly bouncing around (for want of a better phrase) or if it is periods of it iyswim. Anyone? Please.

Mine's the same. When I first had concerns about him it was that he might have ADHD but the hospital decided not to assess as he was 'fine in school'. It used to be thought that ADHD children couldn't control their hyperactivity but that's changed fairly recently, and it's now thought that they can strive to conform just like AS children, then explode at home in the same way.

J eventually got his AS dx last summer, but the assessing psychologist also asked if ADHD had ever been mentioned in the past. J literally bounces off the walls but like yours, it's not all the time. Stress plays a part, any kind of unsettledness, but also excitement (he's just spent half an hour telling me a tale about Raven and he's bounced off every surface), however when he's focused on something passive eg reading he's much more calm. OTOH, he can't even sit still while playing at the computer,or watchint tv, always rocking on two chair legs or getting up to run around.

The two do often seem to go hand in hand. I know of lots of children with dual dx.

Ahh that sounds familiar then, Jack gets bouncy when anyone comes in the house - running in circles - into walls - biting furniture and laughs madly - we call it Jack showing off. Other times he can sit on my knee reading a book but must be fiddling with something. To keep him still I have to tickle his legs. When he is eating his meal he is up and down. He also likes to just pull his legs up and fall onto his bottom on the floor iyswim. He likes banging things and screaming which is strange really for a little boy who hates the sound of the hoover or petrol being put in the car lol.

My dd has both and her Adhd is her primary need. She is 7.5.

mummy2aaron · 05/03/2007 17:12

Ok my next question is - is there any kind of treatment, therapy or straegies to help.

How old is ds2?

KarenThirl · 05/03/2007 17:41

I've heard lots of people say that while Ritalin is effective in controlling the ADHD symptoms, it does tend to exacerbate the autism. Tricky!

mummy2aaron · 05/03/2007 19:37

He is just 4 years old.

probably a long shot but have you tried omega 3 fish oils, i put my boys on them about a yr ago or so now, my youngest is sn no dx exept dd, but he is very hyperactive, i honestly didnt realise what an effect the omega 3 had had until we ran out a couple of mths back and couldnt afford to replace straight away, the difference was noticeable within a few days, luckily we only had to cope for a couple of days before the new lot kicked in, but i for one was pretty amazed tbh with you, if you havent tried them it may be worth a try.

mummy2aaron · 06/03/2007 18:58

Yes we give them to all 3 children I actually think dh could do with some too lol.

mum24boyz · 07/03/2007 13:18

actually just out of curiosity have you been to the health food shop, i just to get some herbal linctus for one of my older lads as he was very hyperactive also, i would say it helped although obviously not solve problems completely, and my eldest took it too, also there is rescue remedy on the market which you can also get from the chemists, i've had that for yrs as the whole family can have it and i bought it originally for the dog lol. might be worth a try as you can put it in his drinks for him, i know i got to stage where i would try anything i knew to be safe so it might be worth having a think about or having a chat with your local herbal shop. good luck hun.x

mummy2aaron · 07/03/2007 13:41

Thats worth a try thanks. What is your Linctus called. I have the Rescue Remedy for my eldest as we have just had a death in the family and he was having trouble coping with it, I shall try it for ds2.
