I have 2 ds and my eldest is 7 with diagnosis of autism, he is mainstream with ehcp. I'm expecting dc3 at the end of March. I think it will be the crying he'll struggle with most (esp if it disturbs his tv viewing!) but his expressive language is v poor, mostly stuff repeated off tv (but I can interpret it into something meaningful most of the time) so there could be more things he is/will be anxious about. His receptive understanding can sometimes be ok with the right visuals and I'd like to start prepping him when xmas/school hols out of way. Any tips greatfully received!

Hi OP,

What I found useful was prepping him lots like involving him in things like buying baby stuff and clothes, discussing names, we went to the library to look at books of new borns in families. My son at first wouldn't understand why his brother would cry so I just had to explain that he needs his nappy changed, he's hungry etc I would also let him help lots with getting the nappy and making him feel involved and letting him know he is a wonderful big brother. Also an old trick is to by a toy ur older DS likes and give it to him if he comes to visit at hospital or when u arrive home and say this is from ur baby brother, hope that helps and u all adjust well!

My son got very distressed when his brother was crying so I got some ear defenders for him that he could wear when the baby was too loud. Really helped.
