Meltdowns

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of meltdowns in neurotypical children who might have some thoughts for me

DD is nearly 2 and has had the odd meltdown since she was a baby but lately it seems to be becoming a daily occurrence. It usually happens after she wakes from her nap and can either appear from nowhere or be triggered by something seemingly small. She is completely unreachable/inconsolable until it burns itself out. Any attempt to sooth her is met with violence.

She is a happy child mostly. Confident and sociable. Fairly easy going but pretty independent with a strong sense of what she wants. She shows no signs of social issues, anxiety or sensory issues.

I don't know if I'm being naive and ignoring signs of her being neurodiverse. Both her older siblings are on the spectrum and I feel I would know by instinct if she was too...but the intensity of these meltdowns is upsettingly familiar which is making me wonder if I'm missing something.

I should add that she has been unwell with thing and another the past couple of months, had lots of back teeth through and become quite clingy and demanding which I have put down to a combination of feeling vulnerable, being nearly 2 and with a sibling on the way having the feeling of things changing.

Can anyone reassure or shed some light on what might be going on?

Sorry, no advice, but that sounds exactly like my son! He is about to turn 3, and has had meltdowns since he started eating solid food. It only happens in response to food, or if he is woken from his sleep. He has absolutely no social or development issues, although possibly some sensory issues with food. He is definitely improving with age though - he hasn't had a meltdown in a while, and they used to be daily occurrences. But I am pretty sure that my daughter is on the spectrum, so think that maybe he just has a couple of traits?

Me again. My son has been ill for a few days, which has resulted in disturbed sleep and constant meltdown behaviour all night. Thought I would bump your post again, to see if anyone had any thoughts!

Although, this article is pretty interesting...

That's a great article thank you Are

I feel like I should know more about this as I've experienced meltdowns myself. Usually due to a level of noise and/or mess that is out of my control...but the whole thing just feels too intense and confusing to me

I'm sorry your son hasn't been well, hope he's on the mend soon Smile
