Ican nursery for speech and language difficulties

My ds3 is 3 and has conductive hearing loss due to glue ear and virtually unintelligible speech. He tries very hard to speak but I understand very little of what he says, consequently he gets very frustrated! He is having grommets inserted and his adenoids removed next month. His SALT thinks his speech problems may not be just hearing related, but the ENT consultant said that it would not be possible to know if his poor speech was just due to conductive hearing loss until after his operation. He has been offered a place at a local ican nursery for september.Has anyone had experience of an ican nursery or has a child with similar difficulties?

There is a local ican nursery here- recently opened- which has a very good reputation. If he has been offered a place I'd take it (you can combine with other nurseries if you want) - it's the only way a pre-schooler will get access to a lot of SALT (without paying a lot).

DS2 has verbal dyspraxia (I susepct) if we ever get anywhere near a SALT I will be asking about the ican nursery for him for a couple of sessions a week.

My friend's ds had very bad glue ear- he didn't start talking until after his op aged 3- but his speech imprved rapidly once he'd had his grommits- really rapidly!

FWIW I have never heard a bad thing said about ICAN nurseries and most of them (maybe all) have beacon status now. Whats important is that you arehappy with your decisionSmile

Thanks for your comments. What are the symptoms of oral dyspraxia? I saw a chiropractic, with my son, a few months ago and he commented that as well as being full of fluid in the sinuses, middle ear cavities etc that my son was tight around the mouth and that this could be contributing to his difficulties.

ICan has a very good reputation although I'd heard that they were closing some of their facilities

oral dyspraxia and verbal dyspraxia are different (although a child can have both). In the case of oral dyspraxia a child will drool a lot, has trouble chewing etc. For verbal dyspraxia (called apraxia in the states) a child has problems producing or coordinating the speech sounds.....
