Echolalia at 2.11 years - is this normal?

I am concerned about S's speech, and nursery are very concerned, and are referring him to Senco over this. One thing that they have picked up on, and I have been sticking my head in the sand over up to now is echolalia - i.e. that S repeats things back that you say to him, and he repeats chunks of telly programmes (sometimes it appears to be at random moments especially when he is tired, otherwise it's a relevant phrase at a relevant time e.g. instead of saying "No", saying "No not a bit (from Hairy Mclairy(!)))

Would be grateful for your opinions.

I would get the referral to Paeds organised, because:

A) you're clearly worried!

B) Our PAed, as an example, has an 8 month wait- you can always cancel, but if at some point your fears are resolved you will still have that 8 months to wait, best get in the queue

C) My PAed told us off most soundly for not taking our concerns seriusly and going to see her!

yes, you are right PC, there may well be a hideous waiting list, so I should act now.

I agree about getting on the waiting list. As Peachy says, you can always cancel if you feel that little ds doesn't need it anymore. Good luck. xx

Hi there mummytosteven, we got a referral to paed as well. We're being seen at the beginning of April. The Hanen course starts tomorrow. The SALT who is running the course came and did the home observation vidoetape three weeks ago and while she was here, gave us some tips. We're already seeing an improvement. DS tends to speak in pidgin and she told us when that happens to repeat the sentence as he should be saying it and keep doing it till he says it properly.

This may seem like a really weird question, but can your son read any words?

coppertop · 07/03/2007 22:32

Susie - Ds1 could read random words. He would read a word from a page or screen and just say it out loud. The rest of the time he was virtually silent so it was a bit of a shock. The echolalia came a bit later.

mummytosteven · 07/03/2007 23:10

susie - nope, he can't read any words.

Interesting. DS3 has echolalia, and although he can't read words he will read numbers! It was quite a shock when he first did it actually, especially as he started quite high- 8. he recognised a C as well, which, bearing in mind that at 3.5 he functions as a 18 mnth old was a bit

Jimjams2 · 08/03/2007 12:37

MTS- I would get a referral to a paed, just because when ds1 was 2 we were told "defintely not autistic, defintely doesn;t need a referral to a pead" by an autism specialist SALT and of course she was completey wrong and we ended up wasting a year. Even if there are no ASD concerns you might want other things checked out- language disorders can be complicated. So unless you're absolutley convinced that there's nothing more than a delay going on I'd seek a referral.

Ds1 could definitely read some words at 2, have no idea whether he can now (aged 7), do know he knows his alphabet and numbers.

thanks jimjams.

My ds has big time hyperlexia, he could read a couple of words at 22 months and now he reads EVERYTHING. It's helped with the speech as he has definitely learned some words from seeing them written down first.

Had our first Hanen session tonight - very useful but I wish we had done it a year ago.

mummytosteven · 08/03/2007 23:07

tell me about it Susie40! And I'm having to do all the spadework myself to get DS on a Hanen course, as our SALT department won't refer us to their course until DS has seen the SALT (in 10 months time!). luckily a children's centre a few miles away is intending to start a Hanen course in a few months time, so fingers crossed.

10 months wait for a SALT, that is terrible. We are in LB Richmond which is great, only a couple of months' wait, but only moved here in December from another borough where they don't even bother doing 2.5yr developmental checks.

PeachyClair · 09/03/2007 19:49

Susie there is NO SALT here in Gwent for SN kids, yu're really lucky!

Hi
I know it is an old post but has the echolalia stopped eventually?
