Ds (10) was diagnosed this year with dyslexia privately. He also has ASD. School has been hit and miss. I applied for ehcp which was rejected as he wasn't in school enough at the time 6 months ago. Head has said they need to have in place 3 lots of school action plus before they can re apply. Anyway, he is very clumsy, always getting hurt, walking into the doorframe etc. His hand writing is so so bad and he struggles so much With it . He's very bright which is great. He had an ot assessment done 6 months ago and was re tested, throwing, catching, drawing within a snake on paper etc. They suggested he had a processing problem. Anyway they sort of just left us as our ot left. Someone else took him on, she will be going into school to do the above assessment? What can this show? What is it she is looking for?

Any help or advice I would be greatful.

Tia

it sounds like he needs an ASD unit alongside mainstream. Visit your local provision to see if you both like it. Open days must be coming up. Ask about applications without an EHCP but one being in progress (The Schools/LA might tell you that unit is full - that doesn't necessarily mean you will not get a place....)

Make sure you keep records and/or write up past troubles so you have evidence of distress etc. You should put that and all the Paed/salt/OT reports in with your application. Get a sample request letter online and bulk out with your son's difficulties with mainstream - school refusal - as evidence of needing "support with secondary transition" and an "alongside ASD unit" at ??? School.

Tell the school that's why you can't wait - and as you're not bound by LA policy like they are - maybe they could help you write the letter, even tho you'll send it? Might be worth a try? Get it sent off ASAP and you might just get it done by his secondary school start - if you chase up every single deadline and threaten them with judicial review when they inevitably run late

School refusal with ASD is a good reason to prompt an EHC - I'm disgusted that they've said its a reason for not doing one Angry.

His primary is mainstream with ASD unit and that is what the secondary that I am signing him up for has. I spoke to their senco, couldn't really comment as they don't know him but said without an ehcp he could have access to inside space so that he's not out on the playground. They said that as he will come across with a school action plus they will do what they can to provide the same...

That sounds promising. Apply anyway. School Action Plus ceased to exist in 2014 - it's all one category now called "SEN Support". good luck
