Any mums of children with hemiplegia?
DD has left side hemiplegia, Nursery want to try her without nappies and a skirt on and knickers to see if that will make her want to use the toilet/potty.

I am not happy with this, ive told them that she has a loss of sensation down her left side and that this is why she isnt aware of needing the toilet.

They say lets try and i say well we tried this last year.

They dont seem to have a clue.

Has your child been through this and if so what did you do?

Thanks

not the same I know but as you know dd has cp. when we first tried to "train " her she had a lot of accidents and in the end it put her off. I think she was worried about having an accident on the school bus. so we use pull ups. that way if she uses the toilet great but if she has an accident no one knows iynwim. she is 11 and very nearly dry now.

ds is 6 with left hemi, no way would i allow that to happen. Agree with 2shoes, pull ups are the way to go! that said, my ds was dry from 3 - 5yrs during day but now doubly incontinent. It's such an up and down thing is hemiplegia

Thanks Mabs, i just dont know how to explain this to them because when i told them yesterday that she has hemiplegia and that as a result she has a weakness and her bladder is affected they just looked at me blankly.

Im trying to find some info to print off for them to read, do you know anywhere i could find some on the net?

Thanks

does this help at all? I does list toileting troubles as being a "side affect"

jenk1 · 03/02/2007 20:11

well i don't know if it applies to your child, but my ds has a 'neuropathic bladder and bowel'.This was diagnosed after quite a few scans and tests in London.

You can put it into google and it will bring up stuff, but some isn't v nice reading if you want to cat me, i'll photocopy the stuff i have and send it to you.

hello
i've a dd with hemiplegia, right sided.
have you looked at www.hemihelp.org.uk ?

they have loads of printable /download-able info, plus a message board etc., really useful.

if your nursery are a bit difficult and you don't feel listened to, get hemihelp to send the leaflets directly to them, or get the physio or o.t. to tell them, i find that's the only thing that gets through sometimes, far more effective than if it's coming from me!

my dd used pull-ups until she was about 5 ish, longer at night. this was on and off, backwards and forwards, for ages.

also, we used a mixture of normal knickers with pull-ups over the top of them for a while - practising combined with security.

nursery just allowed her to do that and didn't interfere, which i think was the right thing. she wouldn't do anything until she felt ready.

when she got a bit older she told me that it was to do with her balance not feeling quite right or safe, feeling she was going to fall. this resolved when she got tall enough to plant her feet on the floor when on the toilet.

she never, ever used a potty, she just wouldn't, again it was the balance feeling wrong that put her off.

you just have to wait, one day she will be ready.
