sitting on the loo?

DS2 is 4 & has in the last few weeks started using the loo for a wee, but he has never sat on a potty or loo,he's always had a big toilet phobia so weeing in the loo even standing up is a huge breakthrough.
But I have no ideas on how to help him to get to actually sit on the loo for a poo.
I wouldn't be too bothered (sure he'll do it in his own time) except i think being out of nappies for much of the day is worsening his constipation as he is holding his poo until he has a nappy on, he won't ask for a nappy on to have poo but waits for us to put him in a nappy, normally bedtime or when we go anywhere with public loos as he is still not too keen on those.
Any ideas however odd would be welcome!

could you try getting him to sit on the loo with his nappy on and the loo seat down to start with

HI onlyjoking
He has no problems when the seat is down, think he sees it as a seat then.

I'll be watching this thread closely!

ds3 is 4 and has a major toilet phobia. At the mere mention of the word toilet he has a huge meltdown. We end up having to restrain him to get him there with varying success.

He would prefer to wet or soil himself.

Ds2 (4) has just started to sit on a potty for a few seconds (although he doesn't actually use it yet). He built up to this by doing what OJ suggests and first getting used to sitting down with his clothes and nappy on, then later with just a nappy on and now with no nappy. Bribery also helped the first couple of times but sadly not any more.

Thanks all
He'll happily come & sit on the loo when the seat is down, clothes on or off, just as soon as that lid goes up he's off.
Bribery doesn't work at all, he always wants the treat before the task & just ends in massive screaming & headbanging.
I need some way of overcoming this fear when the seat is up, I think he sees it as a big hole full of water.
Onlyjoking, lovely photos!

The OT told us that some children find the water/splashing upsetting so suggested things like putting lots of paper down the toilet first. Another idea was putting a nappy in the potty.

Thanks coppertop,
I'll try the paper trick tomorrow see how he reacts, he may feel like there is something under him other than abig hole.
Although he won't usually wee if theres paper in the loo we have to flush it first, but I can't usually guess his reaction so we'll try it & see.
