DLA - Good news so why does it feel so depressing?

I sent ds1's DLA form off just before Christmas and got the letter about their decision today. He used to get medium rate care but from April he will get higher rate care and lower rate mobility. This will continue until his 11th birthday.

It's good news that he is entitled to extra money, especially when so many other people are having to go through the appeals process, but it just makes me feel that the differences between ds1 and other children of his age are now increasing. He's fairly high-functioning but it's only when I started filling in those wretched forms that I realised just how much extra help he does need. Everything from changing his clothes so often because of all the toileting accidents to giving him a running commentary while walking down the street so that he doesn't walk into people or lamp-posts etc. I hate these reminders that our lives will always be different to everyone else's.

Yeah, I imagine that can be pretty tough. ds3 doesn't need nappies at night - he CAN go all night with no problem. His problem is that he will soil and seem unaware of it during the day. His major stress factor is the mere mention of the wortd toilet. He screams, kicks, hits out and refuses to go despite it being obvious he needs to. We have to restrain him every single bloody time and atm I can see no end to it.

Is there any light at the end of the tunnel as far as toileting goes?

Sorry to hear you are down Coppertop.

Filling in the DLA forms is so soul destroying. If there is anyone on here who needs a bit of help or guidance on how to fill them in, I do have a really good WORD document that takes you step by step through the process. Please feel free to CAT me and I can email it on. Please be warned though, even the guide is depressing too.

Ds1 was 4 when he got the hang of using the toilet in the daytime. He was doing well until a few months ago when he just started wetting and pooing himself without being the slightest bit bothered. The Paed has suggested that the pooing might be constipation-related and has suggested using lactulose. I'm hoping to start in the next week or so.

RTB - Yep, I found the guides depressing too! (DLA ones, I mean - just in case anyone is thinking of the Brownies etc! )

coppertop, does your ds take meds ok? My ds starts off ok for a day or so then kicks off about taking it so it becomes yet another battle so we don't bother. Lesser of the two evils, you see

It's something else I'm unsure about. He's fine taking his asthma inhalers because they're a part of his routine but I usually have to hide medicines in drinks. He's happy to take a vitamin sweet though.

Sorry to highjack thread but I received a letter from DLA today sayng they had changed their minds with their decision (it was going through appeal process!) and we were awarded higher rate care for my son.

Thought we'd get middle rate at best....obviously more mony will help with nursery fees however a very bitter-sweet moment.

Excellent news about them changing their minds. Bitter-sweet though, as you say.

DLA is a nightmare i have had to do 9 lots for my three, i won't have to do any now until 2010 when my girls will be 16, mind you they are expected to do there own then aren't they, now that will be interesting

lourobert · 03/02/2007 20:29

It is good news because the financial 'pressure' will obviously ease slightly now.....but hard to swallow at the same time. I keep telling myself I hope we dont get awarded the higher rate mobility in a couple of years......!!

Is good new for my son though
