AUDITORY SEQUENTIAL MEMORY

DS3 has been attending a 10 week programme at a specialist unit 2 days a week for the past 8 weeks...2 weeks left

does not follow national curriculum...but Emotional Literacy

Children there for lots of reasons...some like ds3 who are showing ASD/ADHD etc behaviours- and some who are described as vulnerable/withdrawn- and can include dissruptive behaiour. sometimes used as a pre-exclusion measure.

there is 1 teacher, 6 children and 3 key workers- 1 per 2 children- not all adults are in the class at once- they 'hide' in an observation room with a 2 way mirror- initially they were in class alot- then as the weeks went on they spend more time 'watching' and 'appearing' as needed to assist teacher.

we attended a review b4 christmas- and they 'set up' a task for him that he struggles with- that being 'working in a pair to write a story' and sure enough all his difficulties showed very nicely!

today they gave me a reprt of this review- and it mentioned difficulty with his
AUDITORY SEQUENTIAL MEMORY...and i have a basic understanding ... but can anyone expand?

they've been using social stories, picture jigs and a laminated velcro'd 'things i need list',and a visual timetable to help him organise himself....
they are saying he does not choose to be naughty- and that he genuinely is exhausted by 12 noon with all the effort he has to put in to sit still...concentrate etc.

now as you know i have 1 dx'd with AS and ADHD... 1 with AS...and i believe ds3 is like the one with ADHD/AS.....but they are not commenting on his social skills as such- other than he finds woring in a group hard, hates not being the leader/chooser...so though i still am sure he has AS...they are not overly concerned....

so....what i'd like is you all to tell me what is AUDITORY SEQUENTIAL MEMORY a feature of????

Before christmas it was agreed by his school that they would support my request for the paed to assess him for 'something'...but i'd like a bit more background on this auditory stuff...so that i don't get fobbed off

IIRC
Its (ASM) remebering things you have heard in teh correct order. Most adults use it with out thinking , when they hear a phone number and can write it down or dial it in teh correct order for example.

With regard to young kids I suspect its refering to problems with using information hes hearing in teh correct order. So if told 2 things , ie do X then Y hes trying to do Y then X. Put your coat on and then go outside.... and hes out teh door with no coat , put the car away and get a book, gets book but before the cars away so car then gets forgoten as hes got the book.
If your teh "leader" in a game you don;t have to try to remember what someone else wants you to do.
I'm NOT an educator tho so don't rely on my veiws, I have problems with ASM myself I use lists A LOT to make sure I acheive everything on a shoppping trip or in a day at home. My dx is dyslexia.

Is that the same as/similar to auditory processing? The SALT assessed ds1 on this at his last appointment with her.

UniSarah · 28/01/2007 22:43

don;t know, I don;t recall any thing about auditory processing- BUT it was 20 years ago that I was statemented. I was 15 at the time, hence being quite clued up about my own dx.

If anyone can find a way to help the OPs DS with ASM it'd be a huge favour for him, its such a drag never being sure if you have done everything you were meant to do. List are OK, but only if you don;t lose them, and i often do.

Thanks, UniSarah.

What are ds3's general sequencing skills like, MissesF? If you give him the pictures/pieces of a story to put together, is he able to get them in the right order?
