got a friend who son has been deaf since birth due to severe glue ear. he had grommits etc put in last year but is still not talking. she has had no help with him, 2 salt sessions, and he has just been turned down for the enrichment group at nursery.

i am finding out the SN HV number for her, SN group as well, and DLA number. any other places/help she can access? he is 3.5years old. she was told NOT to teach him makaton.

maybe, it's worth a try.

I would guess they would, after all, with cochlear implants deaf children are becoming hearing children nowadays.

Was it by any chance the SALT that said NO Makaton?
We have had a child whos parents were told no makaton because it delays speech (old opinion and its now proven to help!)

Early Support team were really supportive to me after DS's DX, although he was a bit too old for their help really. It was still nice to have someone come round and chat. Not sure if they are in all areas though.

Is he being offered more SALT in the future? It's scary to think that a 3.5 year old with no speech is having no help at all. Fantastic that he's hearing now though.

can't believe she was told not to teach him makaton - it facilitates speech and communication and certainly lowers children's frustration levels. I look at all the makaton we have taught dd1 over the years and the signs she learnt but now she is speaking a lot more and is able to say the word the sign has gone by the way. Usually she only uses the sign to emphasis her point if we have said no or she thinks we have not understood her.

the trap some parents fall in with makaton is to just sign rather than sign and speak. Makaton was also fabulous for dd1 as she is very visual.

Dd2 used makaton - I taught her a couple of signs - the rest she picked up by osmosis and again as more language and speech comes, use of makaton lessens.

think whoever told her that is not helping at all.

Thats what happened with dd2 eidsvoid. She was very frustrted ans signing helped her a lot!
