Is dyspraxia on the spectrum?

Was talking to someone today who said their child was dyspraxic, so was on the spectrum.
I said that I didn't think having dyspraxia meant that you were on the spectrum, as I thought, to be on the spectrum you had to have the triad of impairments.
I'm now questioning what I said and wishing I hadn't said it.
Can someone tell me if I am right or wrong please.

I have always thought that dyspraxia is a separate condition, which can sometimes be co-morbid with ASD. I would imagine (but am happy to be corrected) that oral dyspraxia may lead to some communication difficulties, but these would be seen as being of a different 'nature' to the communication problems seen in ASD

Yes I thought that it was quite common for children with ASD to have dyspraxic traits as well, but didn't think that you would class all dyspraxic children as being on the spectrum.
I'm still confused.

If it helps any, my ds has just been diagnosed as dyspraxic but not as being ASD.

I thought the same as martianbishop. But children with dyspraxia do often have the social difficulties ie reading social situations and not picking up on social cues, that you see with children on the spectrum. DD is diagnosed with dyspraxia and hypermobility, no mention of ASD at present.

MB I am so sorry you've got a diagnois to deal with on top of everything else.

I think they overlap to a certain extent but I don't think dyslexia is part of the spectrum. Ds1 certainly fulfills all the requirements for dyspraxia but IMHO his ASD goes much further than this.

Oh don't worry about it Katy, ds is still ds, but with a dx we can put in some help, that is all.

He is affected but not so 'badly' IYSWIM.

I've seen soooooooooooo much worse in school and the kids get no help.

I think that tis is copper top, asd is 'more' ina range of more complex areas.

FWIW ds has the odd asd 'trait' but not that much more so than someone who is NT

Dyspraxia isnt part of the autistic spectrum, but like martianbishop says, can be comorbid, ie can occur in the same person.

Theres a number of conditions, including ASD, aspergers, ADHD, specific language impairment, dyslexia and dyspraxia that can overlap, so that if one is present, its common to have signs of another, but not neccessarily so.
