DD is in y4 in mainstream, she has ASD.

She has a safe space in the library, she goes there during break and lunch to read.

The library is in a big open area with the reception at one end and corridors going off to the classrooms.

She is supposed to make her own way back to class when the bell goes at the end of break, but she's sometimes a couple of minutes late.

She says this is because there are various bells and they mean different things, she's never sure which bell it is. Or she doesn't hear the bell because she's concentrating on her book. She says she's trying really hard to get back on time, but sometimes doesn't.

The teachers have decided they will deal with this by shouting at her when she's late back. This just makes her cry, but doesn't change things because she's already trying her best.

She's anxious and hates school at the best of times, shouting at her isn't helping.

The teaching assistant spoke to me about it saying they need a solution, as "DD wouldn't like to lose her safe space " (the implication being if she keeps being late she will lose her space) Angry

How can I help DD get back to class on time? She's very scatty and disorganised so it needs to be as simple as possible!

You must look aftetr yourself too OP!

Try to tackle one thing at a time, if you do a parental request for an ehc assessment it will take 6weeks for your LA to decide if they are going to assess her or not. You should be able to access an independent supporter to help you, google your area and independent supporters and see what comes up.

When you tackle the DLA form there is a guide on the CEREBRA website which is really helpful and you must fill it in based on your worst days.

OP, agree with others re applying for an EHCP now. they are often a battle and it may take you well to Y5/6 until you have a decent EHCP.

I would also raise it with school and make a complaint. to deal with it by shouting is totally unacceptable and it doesn't sound as if you Dd has the right support.

as for doing paperwork (I work 5 days a week with a child with severe ASD and learning diffs and another which I. battling to get referred): I do it at night, often sit until midnight and antidepressants to keep me going. I wouldn't be able to cope otherwise but don't have the option to give up work. it sort of works (at least for the kids).
