ok, I know that question is impossible to answer at this stage but I was wondering if any more experienced parents of children with 'social and communication difficulties' (almost certainly due to Autism, currently undiagnosed, we're in the process) have children who had speech and language delay but went on to talk?

I know it could be a lot worse but the idea of him being unable to communicate makes me worried... potty training for a start seems unachievable. Sad

I have a 5 year old son who has just been diagnosed with ASD. He was totally non-verbal until gone age 4. Now a year on you cannot keep him quiet. He is still very delayed in speech skills as he is nowhere near his peers but considering how far he's come in a year. Even more so since starting primary school. You cannot have a conversation with him and his speech is very repetitive but its so great to hear him talk at all.

My son was potty trained at 3 and a half when he was non-verbal. I am not sure how we actually managed it do it but we did - it took months of hard work. We used pec cards for use toilet etc. They are great.

Ds has asd and had delayed speech but has now caught up. I found teachmetotalk a really helpful website. I didn't buy any of the resources but just used the tips from the blog posts. Also did all the usual lots of reading/singing/gestures and talking even if it didn't seem like I was getting much back. The speech therapist who runs the website says something about measuring success by how much language they are hearing rather than what they are saying which I found really encouraging. Used to wind me up when people would neglect to speak to ds because he didn't talk back.

Hi there,
New to this and know the above are old posts but I have a DD 3yrs 10mths (born at 31weeks)&recently diagnosed with global developmental delay but with significant speech and language difficulties. Paed going down diagnostic route of autism but she doesn’t really fit the criteria at present (don’t think I’ll be going back tbh). She has 20 words- all nouns apart from hi & bye.... any positive stories about similar experiences? Did your child make progress with speech?
Thanks Mums, feeling totally devastated for the future of my DD and so glad I checked on here! 😊

Borntohula, this sounds just like my DD- how is your wee one getting on now?
Thanks! Smile

What I can tell you as a SALT (I work with adults) is that I’ve sat in assessment sessions with autistic adults who have talked my ear off non stop for a good hour (I love love love a session of enthusiastic information dumping on topics of interest - and I’m serious there!) and a very bemused parent has commented that “you wouldn’t believe that they were non verbal till age X” more than a few times!

My autistic daughter did have minimal intelligible speech till age 5-6 but that was due more to co-morbid verbal dyspraxia and her speech and intonation can still be quite quirky now, but the content is there.
