Finally got the prescription for it. Saw the pediatrician and got her note to say prescribe Movicol. Dropped the note into GP and got to chemist and was given docusate. So returned to GP and made appt and this time was prescribed movicol - for adults though. Finally have what I asked for though.

She actually drank the whole lot down in one go. Can't beleive it was that easy! After years of struggling with lactulose, docusate, laxitives, suppositories, and so on.

If this works I'm going to be the happiest mum, with the happiest DD. Finger crossed.

dd has been on movicol for about 12 months now, we have to adjust the dosage every now and then but its the only thing that "shifts" iykwim!!!!

We get the tasteless powder and mix it into her yoghurt, she calls it her "sugar" and wants to mix it in by herself now!!!

chonky · 12/01/2007 23:12

oh I hope it works TeeCee (I'm sure it will!). We swear by it for dd

TeeCee · 13/01/2007 14:28

Blimey, well er yeah, that's what I'd call effective!
A bit hesitant to give it to her again today, but have.

You guys do all do I full sachet in 1/4 of a glass of water do you?

Putting it in yoghurt also good idea for another day though.

I'm loving this Movicol stuff! DD prescribed it last month & it has made a massive difference. She's going every day now and not going purple when she does so. Also am finding what is coming out is more like a natural poo rather than the sickly rancid lactulose stuff. Sorry TMI

Is it a problem to give the adult half dose instead of the paediatric one? That's what we got from gp last time - they said its the same but still a bit wary.

TeeCee · 16/01/2007 14:29

We were going to do half an adult one but pharacist gave me peadiatric solution as it's just a bit easier than measuring out half a sachet of powder.

DD1 hasn't been again yet but at least the solution is getting down her unlike any of the other stuff, lactulose and the like.

I pray for some normality with her bowel, poor little thing.

dd,s movicol kicked in yesterday afternoon at nursery, and it has ruined a pair of jeans

But this tends to happen every couple of weeks or so as she always has a build up over a few days and then an explosion, sorry if TMI

We have tried all the other stuff lactulose, senna etc and i wouldnt use anything else now tbh.

So has the shit hit the fan Good news if it is working. Often meds are for adults only because they haven't been clinically tested on children, which is tricky to do, so experience/practice seems to be taken into account often rather than hard data (no pun intended!!)

3andnomore · 16/01/2007 18:22

This movicol is brilliant stuff isn't it!
My ms started it a few month back and wow, what a difference it made...the first week came nothing so we increased the dose to 2 sachets, and wow, it moved and for a week massive poops...he now is on 1 sachet daily and has regular bowelmovements...now if only he started to put them all into a toilet or potty, sigh

TeeCee · 16/01/2007 20:07

Hmmm well maybe next week I'll try upping it to 2 sachets a day if we don't have some movement this week.

Tee cee every time i see the paed he always reminds me that if DD is having a bad week then we can go up to 8 sachets to get her moving again

We have only ever had to go up to 4, on a really bad week.

Im seeing him tomorrow and will ask him again just to make sure, but dd will be on movicol for the rest of her life i would imagine as its down to her CP, but its brilliant, no more emergency trips to A&E for enemas.

TeeCee · 16/01/2007 21:05

I'll leave her on 1 sachet this week to get her used to it and up it next week and see what happens then. Thanks for letting me know that you can go up to 8 sachets, but don't think, hope, we won't ever need to do that aye.

Can't believe it took so long for soemone to prescribe it. Was it with pediatricians and GPs with f'ing lactuloase? It's shit (pardon the pun!), all of us think so and everyone sings the praises of movicol.

teecee - doc at dd1's hospital did a study on movicol and raves about how effective it is in shifting things. Stated that a good period of being on it helps children who may have been reluctant to poo as well - once everything is moving well they should stay on it for a period of time.

Said although most studies have looked at in terms of use for adults it was brilliant for children.

We seem to be doing okay at the moment with it. Not sure cause it is summer and she is drinking so much more if that makes a difference.

I use a gloop with her too - three prunes, i pear, brown sugar and a little water - stew it all up. Then treat is as juice and give it to her diluted with water to drink or mix some in her yoghurt.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/01/2007 22:14

Another movicol user here TC. Dd has used it on and off for many years.

3andnomore · 17/01/2007 13:39

eidsvold that sounds a good concoction, must say, ms drinks it fine just with water....thought I do him a favour at first by using some juice with it and he wouldn't drink it that way at all...funny soul he is!
He is one of those Kids that has got it partly due to constipation and partly because he likes to hold on to his #2's...sigh..
