Is your child with AS/HFA hyperactive???

Hi

I have a dd with AS who is 7. She also has a dx of adhd. I personally feel that her hyperactive "side" is attached to her asd and comes out when she is more anxious etc.

I just wondered if other children with the same thing were hyper?

Thanks

Two of my DSs have a dx of AS Blossonhill. My 7 year old DS is very hyper when he is anxious-and also when he is tired (does a lot of running up and down, jumping etc when tired).
My 18 year old has only just been dx AS-but when he was 8 he was dx dyspraxic. He was always extremely hyperactive when younger -literally climbed the walls and was always on the go, much more so than an average toddler/young child.

My AS ds is always rolling - can't seem to sit on the sofa, rolls and lolls, we're sort of used to it, but it drove me mad when he was younger.

Thanks for that

Dd is on medication and it has worked wonders. I just wonder if it is true adhd and not just part of the asd iykwim

Tiggi ~ has your 18 yr old ds calmed down?

Ds2 gets very hyper. Like Tiggiwinkle's ds it's much worse when he's tired. He never walks if he can run instead. He is always jumping and climbing too.

Ds1 is almost exactly the opposite. He would much rather stay still the whole time if he possibly could and gets tired very easily.

yes ds1 can be hyperactive, as this i sdefinitely associated with anxiety.

PeachyClair · 12/01/2007 23:37

sam can be, the only thing preventing a dx of ahd as well were his quiet times when he can be really relaxed and sit still for ages- usually obsession linked. otherwise I will refer you to his 2nd birthday notice in the local paper

'happy Birthday to our little Tornado'

Ds cannot sit still. even when he is still he has to be fiddling with something.

I also think it has alot to do with anxiety, over excitment etc.
We haven't had a full dx of ADHD but it has been entioned frequantly.

BH:Yes-my 18 year old has calmed down tremendously over the years. I was surprised when he was not dx ADHD at the first assessment, but with the benefit of hindsight, and now we know he has AS, I think the overactivity was just a part of that. Like Peachys DS, he could concentrate on his "special interests" when he wanted to.
He now spends most of his time sitting at his computer and is certainly not hyperactive - in fact it is hard to get him to move at all!

We're just starting to suspect that DD may be AS, and she has always been called my little whirlwind... she ran from the moment she could walk and hasn't stopped. I have found that diet control seems to help, but that could also be partly down to us having a much more set meal routine when I am focussing on her diet, which makes her more settled in return iyswim.

PeachyClair · 13/01/2007 18:20

Diet control does help, but my ds needs casein, lactose and gluten removed so it is STRICT!

maybe they should add this to the dx interview- 'have ytou ever referred to your child as little professor' (yes, everybosy did, we volunteered his nickname before asking). 'Have you ever referred to your child as a whirlwind/ tornado / typhoon?'

flamesparrow · 13/01/2007 20:10

Argh Peachy - My friend's DS is probable coeliac plus allergic to milk and I've seen the nightmare that his diet can be... it makes me very very grateful that just keeping DD on whole foods seems to be enough to make more of an even keel.

PeachyClair · 13/01/2007 20:21

have you looked at salycylate free diets? EXCELLENT for behaviurs, Sam ewill never have another rasin! however, wait til you see the list........
