I thought they were a good was of making people think about the reality of living with autism (not that I have direct experience)
what does anyone think

Do you know what newspapers or magazines this advert is in as i'd love to hand them to a few family members who need educating!

I think the adverts are good- my son's are asperger's so i was not expecting them to 'fit' the advert.....but both the adverts each fit one of my boys perfectly! What i'm trying to say is as mine are very verbal and don't look 'obviusly disabled' i struggle to 'prove' they are autistic....and these ads definitely do what the NAS aimed to do which is give explanation for why they can appear to ignore(seem rude or in another world) and in the case of my son leigh who takes everything very litteraly ....get extremely anxious and at times very angry .

before i looked into ASD i had the image of

Autistic= Mute,rocking and sat in a corner.

NOW.... i know how vast the spectrum is so appreciate the fact that the NAS is trying to get people to understand the characteristics....as if my sons weren't autistic....i wouldn't have realised how wrong i was in my stereotyped image.

Oh, they did a TV advert last year with a child rocking in the corner headbanging so these are definitely an improvement! I think they're quite good, I think I saw one in Radio Times.

I have seen the printed ads which are, to my non expert mind, very good at getting people to think about what lies behind the ASD child, Very thought provoking and not patronising.

The eye one is ds1 to a tee. And defintely better than the fire thing they did in the past as well.

mrsforgetful · 30/05/2004 19:31

must admit that when i read the 'Eye' one i recognised me....as i find even in my home my eyes 'see so much 'that i often feel i 'switch off' to whats going on or being said....over the years i have convinced myself that it's 'just' my mind 'doing overdrive' and simply noticing things i need to do....but that Ad got me thinking.... (bit like as a child being described as 'miles away' )

I think these are good. I'm going to send off for some to put up at work. Thanks, katierocket. I hadn't seen tham before.

SoupDragon · 30/05/2004 19:45

The eye one was in either the Observer magazine or Sunday Times mag today. I thought it was very good and meant to come to Mumsnet to see that those of you with autistic children thought of it.

These are excellent, I am going to attempt to print them out for my ds's school...if nothing else, it will give them a talking point. I haven't seen them nationally yet, only here. Thanks for that Katierocket.

mrsforgetful · 17/06/2004 23:10

managed to get the 'Literal' Ad in the Radio Times....and have laminated it and stuck it on the wall at home....but i wanted the 'EYE' one too....tried the link to the NAS but cannot find it there.....does anyone know of a magazine/newspaper that has this ad so i can get a back isssue?
