Just wondering if anyone could tell me how you find out if your child should be on a gluten-free diet, the doctor who diagnosed our daughter with Asperger's said there was no reliable test that would give us an answer.

I think any gf bread is pretty vile. DS1 (and ds2) merrily eat sandwiches made out of it though. And my cousin's little boy who started the diet at 6 says the bread is "yummy" and "just like normal bread". (It's not!)

I have a friend whose son is on the GFCF diet and he eats really well, lovely sausages, rice, nice GF biccies etc. I think he's unusual though, most of them still seem to have a limited diet. If you're going to do it definitely best to do it before they know much difference and will take what you give them. A book that I think is good although not strictly on this subject is Can't Eat, Won't Eat by Brenda Legge. There's also Special Diets for Special Kids by Lisa someone that's been around for ages.

I suspect it depends what's causing it. Autistic kids can repair their guts- so they are no longer leaky and then they no longer have problems with gluten and/or casein. My friend has managed this with her son.
