Quick question re MMR

mummy2aaron · 03/01/2007 13:36

DS2 is having his MMR booster tomorrow - he has asd. Has anyone else's child had an adverse reaction to the booster. Think I am looking for an excuse not to really - instincts are warning me but everyone insists it can't make things any worse. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Have to go out but will be back later.

My main problem is that i will have to pin him down and i think it will take a couple of people to do it, if it is only to catch the few that didn't get full immunity from the first one then i'll give it a miss.

i'll give it a miss - thanks for your help - I thought the booster was vital - dd hasnt even had her first yet as she may have problems too.

The Surgery just rang to cancel the appointment anyway - I think it must be fate.

hi, my ds1 and ds2 both have AS and i didnt give either of them the booster. i felt that if they werent covereed after the first time chances were they wouldnt be covered the second and i thought you could go on and on forever getting them vaccinated.

also a small (but ever growing) part of me feels that alot of these immunisations arent really necessary. my grandfather was a GP and in all his medical books, measles etc were a 'nuisance', a typical childhood illness like chicken pox, that was only ever going to be lastingly harmful to the immune-suppressed and the very weak. when i mentioned my thoughts on it to the practice nurse though i thought she was going to explode!!!!!!

the thing is you never really know whether to totally believe what the doctors 'nurses etc tell you when the doctors get paid (alledgedly) for every mmr vaccine administered. i dont know if that is true for every vaccine.

my husband had mumps as a child. and he has had 4 kids- hasnt made him infertile obviously!

sorry- rambling now.

mummy2aaron · 04/01/2007 09:35

No not rambling - helpful. I am not going to rebook the appointment ds2 can do without, he's probably covered anyway. DD I am still in 2 minds about - I will see how she develops, there's time yet.

ds1 had mmr (asd but not related i dont think), no booster; ds2 had single vaccines (asd), no booster; dd has just had 1st single vaccine and she wont have booster either

What about the Diptheria, Tetanus nad Polio jab they have at the same time though?

Mumps Measles and Rubella are often very mild illnesses, but the others are't what you could call a 'nusciance' really.

I'm fairly certain you could request the assistance of a HV or nurse if your child needs restraining, I thought it would take a dozen men in full fencing gear to contain ds2 when he had his before xmas, in fact he just sat on my knee and gave teh HVa very withering look after she'd done both the DTP and MMR and it hasn't made him any MORE autistic just yet

I apologise if that sounds like nagging.

nikkie · 04/01/2007 20:21

emmalou not nessarily mild illnesses.my dds both got measles after having mmr, both had mild versions yet it wiped dd2s hearing and it tokk 2 years for it to come back and it is still not 100%.My Mam also caught it (no MMR) and ended up in hospital. All were healthy prior to this so this could have been a lot worse.
Took 4 of us to get dd2 to have her booster jab too! I held her, nurse held her legs then had to get someone to hold her hands and someone to inject.

nikkie · 04/01/2007 20:23

Sorry cr*p typing there, was on a rant

mummy2aaron · 04/01/2007 21:45

Oh no, now I am unsure again.Presumably then ds2 should be ok without the MMR booster as the first one should have done the job. Dd though should then have the first one. But I refuse to have it done before she is 2 in case of her having asd too - she is already being monitored.

Sorry didn't mean to make it more difficult but measles/mild illness always winds me up

I would go for it and if he is very difficult to do , stop before he gets too bad (Like I said before I needed help). But in the end its your decision and you'll prob worry either way.

I haven't vaccinated ds2 or ds3 at all, and ds1 hasn't had any boosters.

You can just postpone (officially that's what we are doing). It doesn't have to be a full on yes or no decision. If I ever feel comfortable vaccinating, or that the risks of any particular vaccine outweigh the benefits for my children then I will get them done.

I've acutally found that if you do your research then talk to the doctors (don't bother with HV) openly, about your fears etc most are pretty honest about the pros and cons and respectful of your decision.

The MMR is a booster for the 5- 10% who were left unprotected against one or the other following the first jab. The tetanus bit in particular would be a booster to maintain adequate protection against tetanus. Unfortuantely you can't just get a tetanus jab- you have to have the whole bloody lot (6 in 1, maybe you could wangle away with 5 in 1). Makes me furious.

emmalou78 · 05/01/2007 13:57

Mummytoaaron,

If your not 100% about the mmr don't do it, I knew in my heart ds2 was Autistic before he had the first one, ds1 was 3 before he had it and it hasn't affected either of them, but al children are different and only YOU know whats right for them.

I just wanted to make sure you knew about DTP which covers much more serious ilnesses - 'preschoolboosters' is a bit vague if you get an appointment card it should specify WHAT they need to do.

and if its the physical retsraint aspect, it might not be as bad as your anticipating, but I always prepare myself for the very very worst outcome with ds2...

Follow your heart and don't do anythng your not sure about.

Go with your instincts, mummy2aaron.
I wish I had with regard to the MMR.

mummy2aaron · 05/01/2007 20:41

Thanks everyone - lots to think about but at least it's not so pressing now as the appointment was cancelled and it will probably be another month before we are called again.

hi mummy2aaron
I decided not to have the booster with ds2 who has HF/ASD. I was offered a blood test to check if he has immunity, but HV said that taking the blood would be more difficult than having the booster, so decided to do neither at the moment. I may check his immunity when he is older - pre teens as I do agree that measles and mumps can be serious illnesses.

mummy2aaron · 06/01/2007 07:39

HumphreyCushion - did something go wrong?
