Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Can anyone recommend a book on autism, a life story or otherwise?

The title says it all really :D I am looking for a book that hubby and I can read to increase our understanding of autism. As you know our little boy is in the process of assessment and, at the initial one, the consultant suggested he might be on the autistic spectrum. I would really like to read other experiences or possibly factual/helpbook style books that others have found useful/supportive.

Any suggestions, much appreciated!

Thanks
Kirsty

Multi coloured mayhem by Jacqui Jackson. She has 4 boys on the spectrum.

Another really good book is George and Sam by Charlotte Moore. She has 2 boys with autism.

When DS2 was in the process of being dx I found Stanley Greenspan's 'The Special Needs Child' very useful and most importantly, very positive and reassuring. But I'd also vote for George and Sam.

Also for the HFA / AS end 'parenting your AS child' (I got mine on Amazon) is useful, however we're a bit beyond it now (ie we've given up ) so if you can CAT me your address I will post it on if you could use it?

I couldn't read George & Sam as I was at the point with DD when we weren't sure about her. Have you read The Curious Incident? Although not a true story it is a good reflection of AS. I won't recommend the book I'm reading at the moment as it is the closest description of our experience of ASD that I've seen but it would depress the hell out of you although it makes me feel better!

I'd say George and Sam as well. I loved Lucy's Story by Lucy Blackman as she is so like ds1, but its very specific iykwim. I also really liked Stella Waterhouse's book A Positive Approach to Autism- very different from a lot of books, quite heavy going, but I read it early on and it gave me a good insight into the sensory issues. Donna Williams webiste is worth checking out.

Davros would love to know what you're reading- can you email me the title

Another vote for George and Sam , Charlotte Moores writing is quite straight and down to earth.

Many thanks for your replies. Hubby bought me a "boy behind reach" which I think is by Cheri Lawrence (may be wrong about the author). I have only just started to read it so will let you know how it goes. I bought George and Sam today so thank you for the recommendations. I may pop to the library to check out some of the other ones too.

Best Regards
Kirsty
