How to help ASD child understand time?

Ds, 4.5 yrs, has problems understanding ideas around time. He's fine with minutes and hours, but struggles with the idea of days - he'll say things like 'is it tomorrow yet?' 'is it a new day yet?' 'did I get up today?'.

Any suggestions on how to help him grasp the concept of days ending and new ones beginning?

If he sleeps well at night, then you can use the concept of "sleeps until" eg 3 sleeps until Christmas.

Marking days off on a calender can also be useful.

DS2 seems to have twigged days of the week through the CBeebies songs. I don't know if they're online, but you can use them to emphasise "today in Thursday, yesterday was Wednesday." and give a reference point, much like using a number line.

Thanks guys! I've started using 'sleeps' and he definitely seems to get it more. Also going to look at put a movable marker on calendar.
