Just had report from CDC after ds's latest review. He is only 18 months but the paedeatrician advised me to consider applying for DLA. I understood this could only be claimed from the age of 3 (it would be mobility).

Surely it would be both parts, if he's eligible for mobility?

Agree with Peachy. If ds needs help with getting around then he must surely need more care/help than other children of his age. In that case you would be eligible for the care component too.

Have a look at the Cerebra website, they have a great DLA guide (tried to link but site being quickly updated apparently).

Thanks for the repiles - I guess he will be eligible for both parts. The thing is at the moment he has no dx, just gdd, hypotonia and hypermobile joints. He also has valgus feet and will require suuportive shoes. He may walk it's jusy a matter of when.
Does the process take a long time, do I need to start doing yet?

Cerebra have a freephone help-line Tel 0800 32 81 159 (Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm) or their email is [email protected].

If you contact them they will send you a copy of their DLA guide which is a step by step guide for parents & carers to help you apply for DLA. It takes you through each question and gives examples of what to write, how best to phrase your answer & what info to include.

It really is worth getting hold of a copy, particularly if this is your first claim. Yes, it is time-consuming, both preparing your claim and waiting several weeks for them to process it.

I don't mean to sound negative, but be prepared for them to decline your application first time.

This doesn't mean that you will never get it though, and if you are declined please appeal and keep trying.

I started applying when my dd was about 2 (she has heart/joint/eye probs, is waiting for Piedro boots, and is still having to squash into a buggy to get around, even though she's 4 in Feb.) We gave up for a while. Have got forms here to have another go.

Good Luck! x
