Hello, I am a Brit living in Holland but will be returning to the UK in the future. I have a stepson (13) who goes to a special needs school in Holland. He has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. We can live in the UK area of a special needs school to make things easier with travelling each day and to pick the right one for him. So I don't have any specific place in mind to live. I am thinking of the South West area in general though. What is the proceedure for him to be assessed as needing a special school by the UK government? Would this assessment be valid for any school thereafter? Is it possible to do this while living in Holland? Is there a government list of state special schools or are they all fee paying? What are other helpful internet sites which could help me?
Thankyou in advance.

If he attended a mainsteam school how would it work? If he caused disruption in class? Would he be segregated from the rest of class? Special tutors? etc etc.
He has been diagnosed in Holland. I would get the reports translated if required.
I have to say I would love it if he could attend a mainstream school. He has always been at a 'special' school here in Holland and I have wondered if he could have made it in regular school. Maybe I should go down that route first to 'try' it? Then if it didnt work out we would know for sure it is not possible. The LA would then have to sort it out.
I intend to rent a house first thing so could easily move if the situation changed.
Is there a central department in England we could go to have him assessed meantime?

I agree that assessment would be local. Could you telephone schools in a general area your thinking of moving and ask them specific questions? We have found here on SN boards everyone has different experiences.

My ds has a primary dx of ASC with co morbid learning difficulties. He is in mainstream and gets:
Access to student services/Sen anytime he needs it. He has a time out card and uses it before and after school as well as break times. He gets daily inout here with social needs and they tell him If any teacher changes are occurring before the day starts.
Laptop because he physically struggles with writing.
He's previously had 2 afternoons of nurture group and 1:1 emotional literacy support.
Attends homework club and has input from teachers to organise himself.
A seperate room to change for PE as he can't cope with noisy changing room.
He's allowed to use his phone to photograph any information written on a board as he can't copy it accurately - he then emails this to me!
The school also make reasonable adjustments for him with regards activities they provide so if he can't manage it all he just joins in a small part.

I chose this school over the one with the asd unit because they seemed far better set up to meet ds learning needs and equally well prepared and set up to meet his emotional ones. He's also classed as high needs within mainstream.

I am impressed with the mainstream's schools extra support you have mentioned. I take it this is not the norm? Could I ask where the schools are? Or at least are they state schools or fee paying?

Having to be assessed by the place of residence is a little catch 22 in that untill I find a school I don't know where that will be.

I think it is a good idea to phone some schools I am interested in first and I shall do that. I will also wade through the IPSEA website this weekend.

Thanks to all so far.

btw where can I find a list of acronyms?
