How to help ASD Ds pronounce consonants?

Ds is four and quite verbal, but is difficult to understand because he is unable to pronounce a lot of sounds. Incredibly the SLT who came to observe him didn't think he was entitled to any therapy. She would have had her work cut out anyway as his behaviour is really hard to manage.

I'd like to teach him how to say f, s, sh, ch etc... but I don't know where to start. Does anyone know of any resources that would show me how to help him articulate these sounds.

Thanks

Thanks zzzzz. I didn't know of those charities - I'll check them out.

Hi anmut I've found this American site useful. You can do your own basic assessments which give you an indication of the approximate age of acquiring sounds.

mommyspeechtherapy.com

E.g. sounds like /s/ and /ch/ are more difficult to make even for some NT kids. Hence not qualifying for NHS SaLT (which is maddening when you know it would help and you know there are issues). There are also worksheets to work on particular sounds (which you can use with games). NHS SaLT wasn't that great for us and didn't do much different to what this website suggested. There are other issues at play now with my DS so we have now started private SaLT for a while (which is much better!) Good luck Smile
