Three year old with asd starting school in 2016 - no ehcp

Ok so some might know my history. I have a dyspraxic 7 year old with a expressive and receptive language disorder. I have had four appeals to get him a statement. All with zero support from school.

My toddler was diagnosed with asd just after he turned three. He is a asd preschool and the school is for children with severe learning difficulties. However I have to choose a school for him by mid January and he hasn't got a ehcp. For all the reasons above I really don't belive I should apply. Parents are routinely blocked by my la and I will probably have spent £10,000 on appeals by the time I'm finished. Those appeals have only given me stress and a useless statement.

I'm in a rural village and their is a housing estate on the other side of my village school so I'm likely out of catchment for any school.

This only leaves me sending my toddler to his older brothers useless ms.

Toddler is totally non verbal. Not toilet trained. Fairly standard asd traits. Sometimes hits and listens to no one ever.

How long will MS try to cover this up? How long realistically can they say he's fine ( he's also high rate dla mobility as he refuses to walk). He has never said mummy.

If he goes to MS can they force in to change nappys? He only communicates via pecs and makaton. Will it be my reaspobsibilty to provide that? ( btw we only have toy / did pecs so no use to school).

I don't know what to do but I'm 100% sure asking for a ehcp isn't the answer. It has to come from education. Parents are refused.

I would be asking the Asd pre school to apply! I was senco in a preschool and the early years team used to help with applyin for statements am sure it would be the same for ehcp's.

When he next goes to preschool ask them if they will start the process now and tell them what you have said ^^ up there!

Do you think they are expecting him to just move into the school they are connected to?

A MS would have to do all the things you have mentioned but you and I both know that without an EHCP he is likely to be failed!!

I have been told that this is also a assent unit. They haven't mentioned starting the process with me yet. I have written in his contact book and told them that me talking to the LA is a non starter.

The MS school said I would need to get on with a applying now if he was going there. However they are blocking me with his older brother so no one can be stupid enough to belive they will support this.

Toddler has trashed the HT office on more than one occasion.

I was going to send him to a sure start nursery and they said all paperwork has to be in for Christmas for ehcp to be ready for sept start - so I won't get one before the mid jan cut off.

If that's where he ends up I am going to just do a one line email "ds is a non verbal autistic child who is in continent due to his condition" that his one page profile right there.

I am fuming MAD right now. Stupid bloody system.

I hope on day one he kicks the HT in the nuts! I will say " oh he's just a boy, it's normal at this age - but he never does this at home. He seems fine to me! Ta ta enjoy"

I can totally understand your frustration! Maybe this is the child who will sort things out for himself! They will soon be phoning you and moaning if he doesnt come with extra funding so maybe you should just sit back and tell them to contact the LA!

The other alternative is to put the special school on the admission form and then say "Oh does he need an ehcp to go there, you had better crack on then!"When he doesnt get a place!

In my LA there are 2 resource bases for children with asd and they dont need an ehcp to go there, they just need a recommendation from the early years team and to get a place through the mysterious "panel"!!

The schools are goos but the children come unstuck in the end because there is no secondary for them to move to!! Maybe my LA still thinks children grow out of Asd !!

They are all fuckwits and my towel is well and truly thrown!!

So is the senco at the preschool applying for and ehcp? Can you have a meeting with the senco to talk through the process - and discuss collating evidence for assessment?

I thought that even with an ehcp application in process you have to apply by January for a school place - whether it is the school named in the ehcp or not.

choc4ddict · 27/09/2015 17:13

oh 2boys, you got lots on your plate.

I would also talk to preschool to get them to apply. preschool applied for us as well. But with the complex needs he has I would really try to get an application in though I totally understand your frustration.

my friends DS who sounds similar to yours started school without EHCP. school couldn't cope. he ended up on a part time timetable, she had to leave work. was all really messy.

I'm already on a career break but plan to be back in Oct 16. We have a office in London so I will not be collecting early neither will dh.

I wouldn't let them reduce his timetable - I just wouldn't pick him up.

We do have lots of state schools well positioned to take him. There are also lots of indi sen schools ( I have one a mile from my house but it's a boarding one for older asd kids.

I just have to keep on at his preschool. He could stay there until he turns 18.

Just read your OP and though I know it is a horrible thought, I really think you need to apply for an EHCP all the same.

It is easier to convince them and tribunals are easier to win, when you haven't got years and a raft of teachers contradicting what you say, which is what will happen as you progress up the school system.

You don't have to do it the way you did it before. You can be more relaxed (especially if you are starting from a baseline of low expectation, or even not too worried if you don't get it). You probably know quite enough to do most of it yourself. Unfortunately the occasional private report will likely be necessary regardless of whether it is for EHCP.

InimitableJeeves · 28/09/2015 11:26

I agree you need to apply for the EHCP. It seems to me a no-brainer that a non-verbal child is going to need one. Ignore the stuff about the January cut-off for September, it's a nonsense: so long they have the EHCP in place with a placement named before September, it doesn't matter when it's done.

QueenStarlight · 28/09/2015 12:12

Yep. If you name the school on the EHCP they have to accept the child regardless of available places. If you make it clear as soon as you know a wise placement will leave a place open otherwise risk having to add another child and go over their numbers.
