Transition speech unit to mainstream

Hi I'm looking for some advice about DS' transition back to mainstream. He is 5 and a bit, in year one and has been at a speech and language unit since sept 2014. He has verbal dyspraxia and ASD diagnoses. He's been happy at the speech unit and has made really good progress. We've now been advised by the speech unit that, given the recent improvements in his speech and language, the balance of his needs are now such that he will be better off in mainstream with support. His ASD means he struggles with attention and concentration and although he copes in the speech unit without a 1:1 he will def need one for at least some of the time in mainstream. We can see the logic in this and are supportive of the move.

So now we are focussed on choosing the right school and making sure appropriate support is in place for the transfer. His current school have kicked off the process to get his statement changed to an EHCP. What sort of stuff should we be looking out for in this whole thing? Would it help to get an independent EP at this stage? We are not really sure how many hours our son needs and what support should be set out in the EHCP, how does this get determined?

Also, as DS is a summer born, we want to look at getting him to repeat reception when he goes back to mainstream and staying in that cohort of children indefinitely. We think this will help him given he is behind in most areas of the curriculum ("emerging" for everything except reading on his school report in the summer), socially immature and still struggling with toileting. However this idea has been met with resistance by his current school who say he will be too ahead in that year group and he's tall!

Any ideas or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi ahhhcantthinkofagoodname! How are you? I haven't heard on this board for a while now, I'm glad your DS has done really well in the speech unit.

Have you thought about a dual set up? Half days in mainstream and unit so he can transition fully into the mainstream setting to see how he gets on?

Nope, I wouldn't get an independent EP at this stage, unless you want to appeal the contents in the EHCP. SOSSEN have a good guide to see what you should look out for in an EHCP, have you checked on their website?

I know mainstream schools are VERY reluctant to allow a child to repeat a year, but anything is possible! But I don't have much information I'm afraid, hopefully someone on here can give you more information.

Thanks very much for the reply notgivingin. I hadn't really thought about a dual set up, but don't think it's right for my DS. The speech unit are sure he's ready for mainstream with the right support but what I don't get is how to figure out what the right support is!

I know a bit about what sort of stuff should go in the EHCP, ie how it should be specified and quantified, but again how does the actual content get decided?

The problem is his statement before was essentially just a passport to the speech unit and there they have great staff, great ratios and probably did a lot of informal stuff that wasn't on his statement. How do I make sure his new EHCP has stuff that gives him the support he will need in mainstream? Anyone?!

Sorry can't help but am watching with interest as we are in a very similar situation; ds (dyspraxia) shortly to move from a language unit back into ms second year of primary (P2). His unit is more of a base so he spends some time a ms class each day but he needs support for 90% of that time. His unit has also done extra things (like fine motor skills) to support him. I am worried about how this will be replicated in ms.

Bump, anyone??
