Not so good news about ds2

I had a joint orthopaedic clinic appointment for himtoday, to assess his potential for botox and possible multi level surgery. For those of you who dont't know ds2 is 5.5 and has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, he uses a wheelchair.

There has always been hope that he will be able to do some walking eventually, even if only for small distances, with sticks, but as time has gone on and he has become schoolage, he has got tighter and tighter in his legs, which is a hard one to rectify, as he spends a lot of time in a chair at school, and needs 8 hours stretching a day to make a significant improvement they think. This isnt feasible.

Anyway we went to the clinic to talk abotu the botox jabs etc, and the doctor said to me " i think he is one of these little boys who is going to do really well in a wheelchair, and will achieve good things that way", which is a kind way of saying they dont think he is ever going to walk, isnt it?

They have agreed to try botox tho, but he said he doesnt think it will have much impact, but it wont make him worse

I'm upset.

Plus it is probably going to be done in april, and my OH is leaving the country for good on the 4th of that month, so i will be dealing with it alone.

I'm sorry lou, that must be really hard to accept.

I agree that it doesn't sound like they think walking is on the cards.

Life really sucks sometimes.

lou33 · 29/11/2006 15:49

and i took him to the wrong place initially, so had to make a dash to the right spot, no disabled bays free, squeezed into a tiny bay, was late going in as i was late arriving and had dickheads driving in front of me all the way home.

oh and ds1 is still off school

it really does, he wants to be a footballer, and he asks me every so often, if when it's his next birthday will he be able to walk and stop being disabled

Oh Lou. I'm sorry .

geekgrrl · 29/11/2006 16:02

oh f*ck.

get him interested in volleyball? Basketball? (grasping at straws here)

I'm sorry - it must be absolutely heartbreaking. I'm dreading dd2 becoming aware of her disability.

Saturn74 · 29/11/2006 16:05

Oh Lou, what a sad day for you.
Are there any local sports clubs that you could investigate re getting your DS interested in other sports, as geekgrrl suggested?

Alan · 29/11/2006 16:34

lou

he is a bright kid though, he will find his place in life tell him all footballers have thick wives and he needs someone clever

lou33 · 29/11/2006 16:53

lol @ alan

he has had his eye on the same girl since he was 3!

he's a little young at not 6 yet , i think, to get into basketball and stuff, plus his hand coordination isnt that good at, and i know he is bright and all that, but my baby wants to walk so much, it really hurts to hear he isnt likely to

i know its not all set in stone but it's a bit of a shock to me today

have you got msn would love to talk nore but find it hard without naming names ect

2shoes · 29/11/2006 17:50

oh meant to say.
did they not mention surgery or is that not an option.

Blu · 29/11/2006 18:03

Oh, Lou, yes it fucking sucks.

It's a lot for you both to deal with. Really sorry.

Is it worth getting a second opinion?

lou33 · 29/11/2006 18:22

they are trying the botox, but the point is not that it wont knock out the overtight muscles, but he doesnt have the power to be upright

if he doesnt have hte power then botox or surgery will be pointless, but they are prepared to try him with one botox to make sure

blu, tbh i had a feeling this was coming, i trust them, his physio is brilliant and so are the team he has supporting him

2shoes · 29/11/2006 19:52

i am on msn
email me on
[email protected](can't give my msn out as my name is in it)

lou33 · 29/11/2006 20:26

they do jimjams, thats what my young man said, but it is something i have been trying to push to the back of my mind when i watch him

anyway i offloaded to a friend of mine just now and got a bit tearful and have a glass of wine, so hopefully that will help a bit lol

i havent said anything to him, i wont unless i really have to, and i havent said anything to exh, as i dont need any more shit from him right now, and any contact will give him an excuse to lay it on.

most of my friends are childfree and younger than me and single, so they wouldn't understand, much as they love ds2 (and all my kids), so it was good to talk to the one who has been through kid/relationship stuff as well
