SOCKS!!! ASD/ADHD HELP!

HELLO!
I have not posted here before and have been reading lots of the posts and feeling a little bit better about things!! My ds (aged 7) has always been 'odd' different and hyperactive yet at the same time fantastic. He has always had problems with clothes, food and the way things feel. He longs to have friends but finds it hard to form and sustain friendships. He was dx ADHD at age 6 and we trialed ritalin with little success. Now he has been referred for ASD assessment. The waiting list is too long for us as a family, and having contacted the National Autistic Society we have arranged a private assessment for Thursday (yippee-can't beleive I am looking forward to that!)
One of the most hugest problems we face on a daily basis that causes huge amounts of stress is SOCKS (and shoes). He is particular about other items of clothing, but these are more easily overcome. Socks have cost me a small fortune. Last week a postman accused me of child abuse as my son was walking to school in the freezing cold with no socks and shoes and only a t-shirt. I did point out to him the carrier bag I had that contained the socks/shoes/coat, but he sneered at me. Apparantly not noticing my 4 other children well-dressed, wrapped up and happy!
Can you buy seemless socks? He likes to pul socks up to his knees (nice) but can rarely get that far as the bumps are so painful. Sports socks don't work. Any ideas?
Vicky

Yes-socks are a nightmare! My DS is 7 and has AS. He is also very particular about his clothes; we do not have seamless socks, but I try to get them as smooth inside as possible. After much readjustment of them he generally tolerates them.
I get filthy looks about the lack of coat too (and comments sometimes!); I just ignore them. Really cannot be bothered to explain!

Welcome to MN and the SN board.

I don't know about the socks but I think MrsF has had problems in the past with socks (not her own though ) and might know.

I can sympathise with the dirty looks about the lack of coat and warm clothes. My 3yr-old (ASD) is the same. The rest of us are in coats, gloves etc and he's running along with only a T-shirt and jeans.

Good luck with the appointment on Thursday.

Soo know how you feel. Ds hates socks so in the summer i just let him go without. in the winter i enforce it but as you say it costs a fortune finding ones he will wear.

the ones we ate currently having success with are ASDA smart price, about £3 for 4 pairs.. they are long black socks and i turn them inside out so that the seam doesn't irritate his toes.

as for coats....unless its pouring down there is no point even trying.

My ds will only tolerate socks if he has his shoes on, as soon as the shoes come off so do the socks. I haven't tried it myself because as I say ds will wear socks but I've heard that some people find turning them inside-out helps.
