My nephew was born deaf he is six months old and I would love to get him something for xmas that would be helpful for his condition, all baby toys seem to make noises!! I have looked at specialist websites for sensory toys but they are all very expensive. It does not have to be a "special" toy it might just be something that is widely available which other parents with deaf children have found beneficial. Any help is appreciated. thank you!

Something with light, bright colours, different textures.

ELC do building blocks in v bright colours and have different things on top of each cube.

A big soft toy that has crinkly hands, bottons on it's vest, that sort of thing.

Sorry not an expert on this.

Anything that is bright and colourfull, has lights or diffrent textures.

This site here may help {http://www.ndcs.org.uk/information/play_and_learning_resources/playtime_and.html\NDCS}

how about fisher price peekablocks. They do have different colours/textures. Also, don't worry too much about getting toys that have sound, as he will be able to feel the vibrations through his fingers/his body. Obviously don't buy a sound only toy, but one that has coloured lights/pictures that also has sound would be perfect IMO.

or what about something like

this
he would be able to feel the jingling as well - hard to explain but ..

Tinylove do nice "fruit" shaped multi sensory toys. My Ds has an apple, it clips on teh buggy or play pen with a big ring he likes chewing, has teething chew textured hands, mirrors on teh feet, the legs pull through the body to change length, the body opens up with mirror on one side and a nested little apple on a clockwork string that you pull out and it "buzzes" back in making teh whole thing shake slightly. Ds likes teh shakeyness . hes played with it differently at different ages (from birth to now 8m/o) and a friend only got rid of her boys one coz it was VERY dirty after 18m of being dragged around.
I've seen them at Woolworths, for under 10 quid.

My dd is profoundly deaf, and I haven't noticed much difference between her and her hearing brother's preference for toys tbh. As you point out, specialised toys are expensive, and most toys that have flashing lights tend to make noises as well, so not much help really, and I think their appeal is limited. I would go for books; deaf babies tend to be very visual, so something with simple pictures, bright colours, different patterns/textures/materials. I've just bought this for my niece for Christmas - ladybird book - she's six months old too. Great opportunities for doing simple signs as well (ladybird, flower, colours, mummy, baby) if your nephew's parents want to start signing with him. Or how about a light for his room that projects pictures onto the wall - the deaf baby's equivalent of a musical mobile - GLTC has this .

I just got that ladybird book for a cousins LO, I thought if our DS liked it, their DD would too. under a 5er at Waterstones ( but their stock varies wildly store to store)

Hi
My DS1 is deaf but we didn't know at that age
A great toy that his brother has is made by galt and has 4 men that you put in holes and they spring back up. Its very visual and has a nice element of suprise.

A bit of a left field thought and not sure if they do this already but a great gift would be to buy your nephew and his mum a series of baby signing courses. TinyTalk uses British Sign Language in their classes. I think you can also buy CDs.
