Hi everyone,
I'm interested ( and about to embark in this area as we have just got a diagnosis), I see alot about frustrations with schools. Can anyone tell me what to look for in a school with SENCO..... we're about to embark on a new secondary for our DS

You could check their ofsted report as part of it as they do assess how well kids with SEN do in comparison to 'normal' kids. My sons' secondary they do as well as the children without SEN. I also had it recommended by the leaders of the local Young Carers group my oldest goes to. One of them also works with special needs children and most of their members have siblings with special needs/disabilities. Talking to them can be useful. One of the secondary schools in my area said only their support department staff new about Autistic Spectrum Disorders. I knew that was no good for my sons. They need the teachers to word things in a way they can understand as one of them won't accept a LSA trying to tell him the teacher was saying something other than what he thought he/she said and the resulting misunderstandings can mean, for example, a whole homework is totally wrong. The other one because of the Autistic Unit all the staff are trained in working with kids with ASDs.
