ASD 4 yr old can't count or do basic puzzles

Ds has just turned four, he is verbal and the local autism 'specialist' says he does not have added learning disabilities. He can learn some things, like the saying letter alphabetically, reading numbers etc.. However, he can't count to ten and can't do puzzles with more than 4 pieces.

Any ideas why this is and if it does indicate additional learning difficulties?

Thanks

What is this 'autism specialist'?

Such things can only really be determined with a detailed EP assessment. Have you ever had one?

chocnomorechoc, it was the autism link person from the LEA (not sure what official title is) who came to see us 3 months after the diagnosis. No, he hasn't had an EP assessment, I'll look into it. Thanks

Without a detailed assessment you won't know if he has additional learning difficulties and if so, what and how severe they are. I would probably push for an assessment. Does he have an EHCP or statement?

Or have you an EHCP application in the pipeline? If not I would apply myself without delay. It takes at least 20 weeks (often longer) and school is just 3 months away.

If you apply for an assessment, he should be seen by an EP as well (at least that was the case with us).

Thanks chocnomorechoc. Just starting EHCP application now. Only just getting my head round how you have to do and find out everything yourself. We have had no guidance whatsoever since diagnosis in March - if it wasn't for this forum I would be going mad!
