dunno if anyone can help with this, my mates DS is 3 he has downs syndrome, he has just started at a special needs school, mum doesn't drive so dad has to take him to school and has had to turn down work in order to do this, the reason he can't go on the school bus is that he has a major buggy and the school bus will only take wheelchairs, something to do with clamping them down, they have asked about a wheelchair and have to wait 3 months just for an appointment then i dunno how long til they get a chair, so having spent time on google i have yet to find a place where you can hire childrens wheelchairs, the cdc don't have any and niether do the school, anyone know where we might be able to borrow one from?
TIA

Oh that is bloody ridiculous. Does the mum mind publicity. I think its the sort of thing that would go down well with the local rag. Disgusting!

I've just found out about the David and Victoria Beckham children's charity. They provide funds for wheelchairs etc- really hard to find contact details for, but all organised by Victoria's mum. They may fund one. Hang on let me try and find the details.

here I think you write to this bloke.

PS - can you let me know how you get on - we're having major night time problems at the moment and I'm thinking of trying to get funding for a safespace.

yes they have spoken to wheelchair services there is a three month wait just for an appointment, then however long it takes to measure order and make it, school transport used to takes kids on the bus in major buggies but have changed it to wheelchairs only. they won't take him in a carseat because of the lifting.

The safespace could be for me.....

I understand about the publicity thing- dh is the same (me? I'd prostitue myself for a safespace but still ). Might be worth writing to the Beckham trust then. From what I uinderstand you write a letter outlining the situation. Victoria and David have a look at it and then her mum rings you up! I do think its the sort of thing they would fund. And it would make a real difference to the whole family.

AFAIK, school transport won't take children in wheelchairs unless they are fully supportive with a headrest etc - ie the bloody huge ones which it sounds like he doesn't need if he's currently in a major buggy.

They are definitely being fobbed off, the education department should provide transport (taxi or bus) and he should be in a car seat which should also be provided by the authority. She should get in touch with them to sort it out ASAP.
