Autism and new teeth!!!

My ds is 6.5 no baby teeth have fallen out yet but he's becoming really upset and meltdowns galore. I've started to suspect he's in pain and today noticed he refrained from his snack in the car so I gave him neurofen as I noticed he was pushing his tongue against the front bottom teeth . I've tried to look but he just won't let me, and is non verbal.
Besides getting an emergency sen dentist apt- do any mums have any advice?

Are his teeth wobbly? Dd3 hates wobbly teeth and got very uspet with them.

I would keep going with the neurofen and speak to an sen dentist! Nothing worse than pain in your mouth Sad

Good luck Flowers

DS had a huge panic attack when his fell out. The psychologist explained that it is the change in the mouth that was upsetting him and not the pain (he has a very low pain threshold). How is his understanding? it might help to explain what will happen to the tooth and that another one his coming, that this had happen to you….

I'll try and wobble them when I brush. He's so upset when I go near him with a toothbrush, or ask to see. He's been stimming also for weeks and I thought it was regression. I'm looking back now and thinking it must be pain... If the dentist wants to take out the baby teeth that will no doubt be a wait. Shall I just broken and calool till then throughout the school day?
I just don't know how to bloody fix this and make it better.

ps: DS has Aspergers so speaks but he couldn't explain it too us he would just scream.

His understanding isn't great. He's so overcome with me going near his mouth and being non verbal he just shrieks understandably. I just grabbed him and had a quick look. I can see what looks like a white tooth on the bottom trying to come up but his tooth isn't wobbly in that's oace. However, the gap between his 2 bottom teeth has got a little bit larger which I noticed 2 days ago.
Do you mums think it will push the old one out? Or will it have to come out under sedation?
I also think because he's not eating much that's also frustrating him as he's hungry. I've gone with soft pasta and Philadelphia, and his moods improved before I gave him calool. So I think it's the combination of hunger and pain. And no way to make it better besides copious amounts of medicines I suspect to get us through till we get an apt.

Molly- how did you help your ds?

I would go with the soft foods and pain relief as much as possible, Dd3 is really hard work when she is hungry ornin pain. She is also verbal but often doesnt say she is hungry or in pain I just notice her behaviour changes!

Sorry was meant to say High threshold for pain Confused

Mollyweasley · 21/04/2015 18:51

the first was the worst and they progressively got better. Also he is getting much better at managing his emotions so it all helps. The first time it happened we just panicked too because we weren't aware of his diagnosis but in hindsight, I would do whatever usually calms your DS: back rubbing, music, distraction… on top of calpol, neurone and cal gel!

Mollyweasley · 21/04/2015 18:52

sorry neurofene not neurone!!! Blush

Lesley25 · 21/04/2015 18:58

Thanks everyone.
It's school time that's the hardest. I think I'm going to ask school to give him neurofen mid morning. Does chewing gum help?

At school he's been putting crap all sorts in his mouth, much more then usual so I wonder how long this has been going on. I thought it was regression.... Does this come in fits and starts? So ok one week, terrible the next?

Update- dentist brilliant. Yes it's a wobbly front tooth, he reckons it should be out within a week or 2. I'm going with bonjela calpol and neurofen but school called to say they can't cope with his aggression (he's smacking a lot). the dentist prescribed pain relief so said they have to administer it in school time (currently only give prescribed medicine) so I have a letter for tomorrow.
I'm stuck, do you think I should take him out of school till tooth falls out
( not ideal, ds will be miserable at home as loves school), but I'm worried he's going to be "sent home/expelled" because they can't cope. I also get the impression that they're letting the kids outside because of the nice weather forgoing routine and one of the other ta's are off sick so being stretched. I don't want to take him out of school but I don't want ds to fall back into the horrible routine last term where he was just permanently labelled as " having an aggressive day". The dentist said this would have been going on for weeks so all this behaviour could well be attributed to this new sensation, especially as we has a good week last week.
What would you mums do?

Thanks polter. Like you said, I was so reassured that the dentist said, "it's normal". I'm not used to hearing that. I was so relieved I got a bit teary.

...I have to agree a plan and see the HT.
