Best practice guide for 1-1/ small group support

hi everyone,

Can anyone point me to a reputable best practice guide for how 1-1 support and small group support should be delivered in school?

It would be really useful for my evidence bundle!

  1. Try to avoid getting 1:1 actually written into any statements.
  2. If it does get written in, know that it is due to pushy parenting and nothing to do with need and feel free to use that 1:1 support for more deserving children in the class.
  3. Use the word Velcro a lot when the parent finds out and then lie and say that it is for the benefit of the child's socialising.
  4. Hire the person who will accept the lowest possible pay and make sure they know that they are the teachers assistant, NOT the child's.
  5. Tell the parents that the 1:1 has received extensive training regardless of whether that is true.
  6. If you work in an Ofsted 'Outstanding' school, refer to the 1:1 as 'an outstanding 1:1'.
  7. Use the 1:1 to cover the class whilst you go and help raise the SATS attainment levels of the year 6s. If questioned say that the 1:1 is taking a 'group' in order for the child to learn social skills.
  8. Feel free to ask the child to stay at home for school trips so that their 1:1 can attend as a helper.

No not SALT Senvet. Whenever we talk to school about a concept of 1:1 support that has the flexibility to adapt to whether at any given time the child can cope in whole class vs work in a small group vs actual 1:1 and also the capacity to deliver differentiated programmes they look at us like we are from planet Zogg.

My evidence deadline is all but minutes away but it would have been handy as we have anecdotally confirmed that this is how 1:1 is successfully deployed in some good supportive schools.

You can apply for late evidence on the day of Tribunal, but obviously the earlier you go, the more likely it is to get accepted.

If something turns up, just apply for it to be admitted out of time.

I have been to 3 tribunals and my LA have entered late evidence on the day at each one!!

I would definitely take something or send it as soon as you find something and request for it to be added. They are quite helpful and we are "only parents" so are bound to need help Wink

To be honest though I would be surprised if anyone has published such a document!

mines the other way ineed - mine have never served late evidence but then again they never have any evidence Smile

would be good if such a document did exist but I doubt that it does as well

It maybe something that there is academic research about rather than a best practice guide? Problem with research papers is quality and interpretation and there are often papers showing the opposite point of view - 1-2-1s can be detremental to learning. So I would be careful about introducing these as evidence.
