EBI: Handwriting

On the front of DS's recent year 8 exam paper, the teacher has handwritten his feedback in WWW (What went well) and EBI (even better if) bullet points.

Apparently, my dysgraphic son's work would be even better if he could write more neatly.

Well yes, it would be, but he can't improve it. That's why its called a disability. So, how about suggesting improvements instead that he has a chance of delivering if he tries really, really hard??

Grrrrr!

I get that kind of rubbish for my hypermobile dd. I tend to write emails to the SENCo and copy the teacher

Will your ds be typing exams in due course? My dd gets a separate room for exams as well so she can change position and wriggle about. Holding a sitting posture for exams in year 10 made her shoulders and knees swell as well as her wrists. But touch typing, own room with sofa, bean bag, and chair seems to have done the trick.

He should be typing now but I'm told that he can't type in exams unless its what he normally does in class.

Unfortunately, he won't type in class because it makes him different and would prompt questions from the other children which would mean he'd have to reveal his dysgraphia.

My latest attempt to address this is I've got him to agree to type up his notes for English, history and RE each evening so that he has something to revise from when he has an exam. (DS also struggles to read his own writing). I am hoping that he'll quickly get bored and realise that his life will be easier all round if he just starts typing in class.

I do feel sorry for the teachers in the more word-heavy subjects who have to read his writing though. His vocabulary, spelling and grammar are all really good and its only because you know the appropriate word is hidden in the scrawl that you can work out what he's written.

However, I still think the EBI was really stupid. Like telling someone who can barely walk that their PE lessons would improve if they would run faster.
