India Knight

India Knight has published an article in today's Sunday Times regarding the birth of her daughter who has been diagnosed with a chromosome 22 abnormality which can lead to a variety of problems. So far the baby only shows some heart problems. I thought that it was a very sensitive article.
In it she mentions that she has started taking part in online chat groups, so if you are reading this, I thought it was a very thoughtful article and I hope that your baby is well.
Anyone else see it?

What an interesting article. Thanks for pointing it out, hmb... I found it online here

I read this in the paper this morning, and like Froot I love her column, it is always worth reading. Also echo what has already been said, and wish you & your beautiful daughter well if you happen to read this.

I thought it was a very good article. agreed 100% with her. India Knight write a very pertinent article 2 days after ds1 was born (abut c-sections etc when I'd just had one).

Jimjams · 25/04/2004 18:50

and she conjugates tenses better than me as well....

bossykate · 25/04/2004 20:46

she will have to watch out if she starts posting on mumsnet. quite a few people who don't like her more frivolous work - though i didn't see the article mentioned here.

i do know she didn't quit smoking when she was pg. that wouldn't have had anything to do with the chromosome disorder though.

This is a lovely piece isn't it (thanks for posting the link as hadn't seen it). In contrast, did anyone see the article in this month's Red, featuring the mother of a little boy with Down's, very honest about her difficulty adjusting (she sent him to her childminder on his first birthday as she couldn't cope, for example... ) but disappointing as the mag has done nothing to disspell the usual 'myths' about the condition that she spouts. Have written ...

India has posted on a heart disease group I use - surgery on Tuesday....fingers crossed for a good outcome.

The comment about online discussion groups did jump out. I think that this is effectively the third consecutive week where online parenting groups have been mentioned in the News Review section of the ST (Mumsnet having been covered specifically twice). Clearly life is changing, and I guess it is not surprising that someone like India would/could turn to some of the specialised email groups to find other people in the same boat.

Like others I don't always agree with India's view of the world. But as she faces new experiences and interacts with a new bunch of "virtual" firends, it will be interesting to see how her views develop. I got the impression that a lot of journo's tend to hang out together (I think that India is often quoted in Jenni Murray's book on bringing up boys for example)- boards such as this may be the way for opinion-setters to have broader contact with the rest of the world.

I do hope that the surgery goes well - 12 weeks seems so very young

When dd was diagnosed with heart disease 10 years ago, support from anyone about the day to day stuff was appalling. Clinical problems and crisis management were fine but you had to be really pro-active to get (or offer) anything else. Finding online support groups either specialist or general in the last couple of years has saved my sanity!

What a fantastic piece. Well done India Knight, and thanks for writing it. I hope it's read by thousands and I hope you change a few minds, make a few people think differently, I for one couldn't agree with you more.

fairyprincess · 26/04/2004 11:02

I always read India Knight's articles. Sometimes agree & sometimes disagree. Always interesting.

India - Wishing you all the best at this difficult time. Hope everything goes well

hi all...
anyone know how India is doing? (and Nell?)
Hope all is well.

ragtaggle · 01/05/2004 08:07

I used to like India Knight too. When I got time to read the papers. Just want to know the secret of everyone here - How do you fit in reading the papers and can you let me in on it please? If I do manage to pick up a paper I never make it to Review section. (But then my dd is only six months and ripping up paper is her favourite game..perhaps it will get better)

oliveoil · 04/05/2004 10:52

I read this piece as well and love her column, don't agree with her all the time however. I defended her once on a thread when things were getting mean, going on about her appearance etc, and it wasn't appreciated too much by others. Hope she doesn't see that one, think she was mentionning women going back to work too soon.

It said on sunday at the bottom of where her column usually is 'India Knight is away', hope she is ok.

luckymum · 04/05/2004 11:29

No update yet on Nell - its big op she's having so hopefully no news is good news.

luckymum · 10/05/2004 14:36

Just heard from another group - Nell's heart op has been successful, she's still in PICU as she has had a few problems (now sorted) and hopefully will be on the normal ward in the next few days

Piffleoffagus · 10/05/2004 14:48

I first read India Knight when she was writing to Ruth Picardie, the book was amazing, when my best friend got diagnosed with breast cancer last year (her dd is 18 mths like mine) I turned back to Before I say Godobye for inspiration on how to be a good friend for her.
I am very sorry she is going through all this, as I would be for anyone, I have a dd with a heart complication due to a genetic condition and know greatly how online support groups have helped me.
Best of luck to them all
xx kiwi

Not sure if there is another thread on this but her column was back on Sunday and she had spent a few weeks in hospital with her dd and partner, think all is well. Hope so anyway.
