Having had a parents eve just before half term I've been mulling over some of the info the teacher gave me about DS who is 6. He's a loving, caring, spirited boy, lots of energy, sensitive, lots of friends close circle and peripheral, girls and boys. However I've always had a niggle that he's a bit more sensitive than his peers, he cries really easily when he's not getting his own way, although this seems to be improving with age, we have to get the seams in his socks right, always in shorts even in the snow, always moving around the bed to find the cold spot! Not great at concentrating and likes to be on the go although he will sit down and do lego, construction etc.

The teacher said he was progressing and doing 'really well' but has problems with short term memory, very bright with fantastic ideas but struggling to get his thoughts down on paper and gets frustrated as a result, he concentrates more on what everyone else is doing rather the task in hand. He's not disruptive in class, although likes to joke around but is capable of sitting still for short periods. I'm aware that he does a computer programme that is hopjng to improve his working memory, not sure which one at the moment. His reading is where it should be, the other subjects I will find out when I meet with the teacher later in the week. When asked if there is anything I can do at home I was told no, he's on the cusp of flying, once it clicks he'll be off. How can that be when he can't record his thoughts??

Not sure if anyone can offer any advice, I've been trawling the net and have got fog on the brain!! I'm thinking dyslexia perhaps?

Oh and I've booked an apmt at the docs for a hearing test because he said sometimes he can't hear?

I agree with Polter. EP and a sensory OT should help to fill in some blanks.

What happens if you write his ideas for him - eg if his homework is to write a story or a letter?

He's not been given any 'big' homework to do yet, so not sure senvet. It's all what he teacher has told me. I'm meeting with her tomorrow. I've been into a cursive writing class today and he's engaged for a little while and then off on a another planet, dropping his pencil on the floor putting it down his top all to the amusement of the rest of the table - not mine though!

yes, been there!
If holding the pen hurts or is much harder for him than his class mates, then he is doing a great job of keeping his spirits up.

Did you notice anything sensory at all in class, or is that just at home?

So what I did was get a good OT onto it. That explained everything, and she gave ideas for both strengthening the hands, and making it easier to write eg by having different grips on pens or, for a friend's ds, a writing slope.

The recommendations for sensory stuff is again a blend of changing sensory things to reduce distraction, and therapy to reduce how easily distracted dc gets.

I hope this helps

Nothing more than sucking his thumb really, the teacher said he's doing well and nothing stands him out from the rest of the class particularly. I told her what my concerns were, poss Adhd, I think my stepson who is in his 20's has this but it's gone undiagnosed, he's certainly struggled though school. Poss dyslexia - his uncle has this and poss my dh, again undiagnosed. She said she will keep a close eye and carry out a cops test. I've asked her for regular updates which she is willing to do. I feel a little more relaxed that he's on their radar, I know there is definitely some 'need' there. Someone suggested retentive primitive therapy so I'm off to trawl the net and see what I can find out about that. Thanks for your input.
