Tips for getting ds to swallow his capsule

DS (nearly) 7 was dx with ASD at 3. Lots of times ADHD has been flouted too and earlier in this school year after a difficult transition we both (school and home) completed the Connors questionnaire which confirmed this. Actual scores were eerily close from both. He needs virtually full time 1-2-1 in school and home since his impulsiveness is off the scale. He is a very bright boy but is really struggling to concentrate long enough to engage in lessons.

After much thought we have decided on a trial of Equasym XL capsules. I have just tried (unsuccessfully) to get ds to swallow this...

I'll try again tomorrow but any tips on how to administer would be greatly appreciated. It says not to crush or chew.

Is it that he won't take it or can't swallow it?
I get ds to get a mouthful of juice then he pokes the tablet in his mouth and swallows the lot.

He says he can't swallow it... I told him to put it in his mouth then gave him his milk to drink, which he did, but the capsule was still there.

We tried with another one and the same.

I always put the juice in first because otherwise the tablet can stick to the tongue. We had a right kerfuffle when ds first got his tablets, it took a few days to get the hang of it.
Another way could be to get a spoonful of smooth yoghurt and put the tablet in that so it all goes down together.

Thanks... reassuring to hear that it was difficult for you to in the first few days.

Will try both of your suggestions tomorrow. Just wanted to try a couple of days at home first so I could monitor him. If we don't succeed tomorrow will leave it until next week-end.

Some others might be along with more ideas in the meantime.
Ds has omeprazole capsules and we were told to empty them out into a drink for him. It was horrendous. The beads would stick in the glass or I would spill them on the floor. So I decided to get him to swallow the whole capsule instead. It took a few days but he manages fine now. He's been on them since May and then last week the paed decided to offer it in syrup form. Yeah that would have been ideal back in May ffs!!

Thank Polter that spray looks good. Will try with Tic Tacs, which are a favourite treat of his.

My ds capsules give instructions on how to take the capsules. Swallow with liquid or empty contents onto applesauce or yoghurt. We did the latter and it was fine. Of course this depends on what is allowed within the instruction leaflet , so please check in case it's not allowed .

Pill in mouth, then one of those yoghurt in a tube squeezed quickly to fill his mouth (about half of it). Works great for us. Good luck

minionmadess · 21/02/2015 19:54

He does like the yoghurt tubes so this we could try too... thanks.

Sadly chow the capsules have to swallowed whole, no crushing or chewing.

Success today with yoghurt...

He has appeared calmer with good co-operation to requests. Has even managed some homework for me see what his attention levels were.

It's only day 1 I know but a tentative, so far so good... he has just eaten a good dinner and has not reported any side effects. Back to school tomorrow so we will see.

Thanks for posting about the spray Poltergoose, I have ordered some as I need to get my daughter compliant with taking medication. If she has a liquid now the volume is massive!

Speak to your peaditition as my daughter has the same problem and our peaditition told me it was fine to split the capsule and put the powder into a yoghurt.
