boys long socks to wear with AFOs?

Can someone please help me!! Ds is 28 months, and wears AFOs to just below his knees. He was wearing Gap socks unrolled, which we used to be able to pull over the top of the AFO, thus making sure the strap didn't rub his leg. The problem now, though, is that his legs keep growing (I know, terribly normal of him!!!), and I can't hoik the sock over the top of the AFOs anymore, and the socks slip down. This means the strap rubs on his shin, and it looks so sore (no blood yet, thank goodness). He's a small 5 1/2 (teeny tiny feet, but long legs - one of the things with Spina Bifida), so I suppose I need socks from a size 6 -8 (23-28). I'm having real problems. Found some nice black ones in BHS yesterday, but they had a load of glitter on them! Help please!!!

The only thing I can think of are knee-high school socks... you may be able to get them in a size 6-8...

Or, what about football socks? They are knee length too....

Good luck!

Are there any girls knee socks? Look in the girls sock section. Possibly in the school uniform section at John Lewis or an old fashioned 'schools outfitters' because private girls' pre-schools often have uniforms with long socks.

The problem with football socks is that they are often nylon, and we find with DS's orthotic that it is much better to have cotton socks. But we can't find any 100% cotton socks atm, only 'cotton rich'.

Quite a lot of DS's socks are a few sizes too big- we get ones which are as unstructured as possible so that it doesn't matter.

Are the glittery ones stil glittery if you turn them inside out?

primark sell some that work with AFOS, just buy one size up .

Blu · 24/10/2006 12:14

That's helpful - thanks SGK.

i have been thinking about this(half term so I am slow)
We use the long white girls socks for dd.
what about the long grey school socks. or if desperate you can get long colourful girls socks.

If finding socks is a problem, ask your orthotist if they can put a lining in the afos. Some places can line them with stuff like very thin chamois which stops so much sweating and rubbing. Also try getting the fit checked esp if your son has grown. lots of kids are fine without long socks if their afos fit well, depends on their skin - some rub more easily than others.

mum2seb · 25/10/2006 08:01

Thanks, everyone! Our orthotist lines the AFOs with what looks and feels like a thin layer of plastic foam. They don't seem to want to spend anymore money on him than that - she cut his AFOs last time so that his shoes had to be 4 full sizes bigger than his feet - he couldn't walk (we cut them shorter!). He only grows a size every 6 months fgs! The glittery ones in BHS were glittery on both sides, so no joy there. We'll try Mothercare today. Unfortunately I haven't got a car, and can't get anywhere with a Primark (maybe I can enlist my Mum... What else are Grandma's for?!), but maybe I can get to an ASDA. I think it's a case of just keep looking! And yes, I think it will be girls long socks - that doesn't bother me, he's got long trousers on, after all!

mum2seb,
sorry but i am enraged on your behalf about the afo's being too big, that is totally not acceptable for your ds- you need to complain loudly and just refuse to take them at that size!

this happened to my dd(i had commented about the larger size at the appointment) and she ended up falling over more and more-so i demanded a follow up appointment and just refused to leave the department until it was sorted......

they don't mess around with my dd's afo's anymore
and ensure they fit correctly- but will let you know after our next appointment next week

Blu · 25/10/2006 09:28

Mum2Seb - if you get no joy, start a thread put out a call to a MN-er close to a primark, and someone will offer to send you some if you send the money - I know they will , especially if you explain it is to go under a splint.

I am also shocked at the way his AFOs were cut - that's ridiculous - definitely complain. At the hospitial where we get DS's afos they have a workshop on site, and I just sit there and say 'we'll wait for you do do the alteration, I think'. But then we are having terrible trouble with the appointments sytem and ordering of shoes.

Blu · 25/10/2006 09:30

I don't go near a Primark regularly, but I might make a special trip soon to check out the socks SGK recommends, and I could send some for you if it helps.

fubsy · 25/10/2006 20:31

Four shoe sizes too big? Thats just ridiculous and wont save money in the long run because he will just grow or change shape somewhere else. Keep pestering the orthotist/physio until you get afos that fit! because it also doesnt hurt if theyre a little bit short, as long as his toes dont start to curl over the edge. But big gaps or too much length is just bad practise in my opinion. I know its quite difficult to get tiny afos to fit perfectly, but it shouldnt be that hard.

I think we're going to go in to this appointment on the 11th Nov a bit more clued up! These were only his 2nd pair (like I said, his feet grow so slowly, so they seem to last about 6 months), and my husband was livid last time. Good job he's good with power tools!
Anyway, we seem to have found some wellie socks that are quite long at ASDA, along with some reasonably plain brown girls ones there too. He's very impressed with the stripes (how to keep a 2 year old happy...!). I think we'll just stock up whenever we find some - just in case his feet decide to have a growth spurt in high summer when there's no long socks around!!

Hi, sorry, maybe too late to join this thread, but i get socks for ds from ethelaustins.

3 pairs of girls grey knee high socks for £1.50.

Tgought they were quite a bargain.

Also used to have the same prob.

Also use asda's girls roll down ankle socks, 10 for £2.50, just roll em up rather than dowm.!!! lol.
