Hi thank you for allowing me to join this group. My foster daughter has just been confirmed with ADHD and put on prescription drugs. She goes to school quite a long way from Bromley and we are looking at moving her to a local school, but will need help with her education can anyone recommend a good school that will suit her needs. She is 9 but working as a 5 year old. I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Cassie welcome to the boards.
Do you have any info on why dd is working as 5 year old at age 9? You don't need to answer on the boards, but I just wonder if there is more than ADHD going on.

I don't know Bromley schools, but heard Furness School in Swanley could be good.

Is that anywhere near?

Hi thank you for your reply. I have both children one is 11 and the other is 9.The birth mother (who worked for me for 7 years) and the oldest were co-parenting the little one and she was basically left to her own devices. Roaming the streets and being left alone at all hours. Until it came to the crunch where she was left alone and she was knocking at neighbours doors for someone to look after her was when ss became involved. So I think Sadly due to the fact there have been so many different men in the girls lives and the little one was just left to get on with it is how she has come to be so far behind.

Cassie you are doing something really amazing for these kids.

I hope you are getting support from social services or someone.

The advice most people will give you is to look at lots of schools both special and mainstream and ask lots of detailed questions like how they will support dc, how much of their SEN budget is already allocated, how they will encourage her to stay focused and discipline.

I always found the answers to discipline questions sorted the sheep from the goats. If they are at risk of blaming dc for things that are not her fault then I would think very hard before sending her there. They should be able to set targets that she can meet and give her praise for meeting them, whether it is attention type targets, or any other behaviour that they want to see improve.

Fantastic to have 'met' you

Hi Senvet

Thank you I am trying my best with the girls and they are safe and have everything they could want for. The boundaries are a bit tough for them as they have never had boundaries and I think they are so important. The oldest thinks she is 18 and not 11, but I believe thats due to the fact she has co-parented. Its tough on the children as they adore their mum, particulary the oldest as she was treated as a friend rather than a daughter so she is going through a difficult time. I adore these children they just need some guidance. At the moment we are going for an SGO. Hopefully we will get her a school sorted out soon now that ss have agreed. Thanks so much for your advice its much appreciated. I am also new to this area so really don't have a clue where to take the children during the holidays..

Sorry I can't advise very specifically re schools, but just a note really to say that is it looking likely that Furness school will be closed at the end of this academic year.

If you are looking for specialist schools then there is Brown's school in Orpington which is an Indi specialist school - not sure what criteria they need and how well this suits the needs of your foster daughter though?

The old favourites are bowling, cinema/DVD, swimming, or a new try-a-sport like trampoline.

home cooking eg topping pizzas or making smoothies, and painting - very large bits of cardboard to be room decorations.

If you put a new post on this board asking for local ideas, I'm sure you will get some help - people will be impressed with your devotion to these two dcs

oh, and nail varnish pens and nail art.

Hi, I dont know anything about schools in bromley, but as a looked after child it should be possible to access some support for her either in her current school or at a new school.

You need to ask any school new or current what they can do for her and then follow up on everything they promise. Firstly she needs to be seen by an EP (educational psychologist) to find out what she is struggling with and what she can do.

Good luck Flowers
