Looking for advice from those who have either had a diagnosis for their child of aspergers or HFA or have decided not to pursue a diagnosis. My husband and I are finally after many years pretty sure our 9 year old DD has some sort of ASD, but are torn about whether a diagnosis would have a positive or negative effect. She had struggled socially since preschool and the differences were raised by school when she was in reception, but progress

Thanks so much everyone for all your advice. So good to hear people's experiences for their DCs and themselves. We are coming to think that she probably needs more support - the school are great, but secondary school is getting closer and I can see that she going to need more support, plus she's turning more to her own world as the other girls become more social, which is only going to get tougher for her. I have an appointment with her teacher tomorrow so a good chance to talk through what's going on at school and to ask to speak to the ed psych again.

Just a quick update after all you lovely people replied to my dilemma! Were seeing the ed psych, senco and class teacher next week to get a referral to the ASD team. After all these years we've finally realized it's time to get some more support. Things have actually improved in the playground, but behavior at home had it's interesting moments as things seem to be bottled up until she gets back from school. I think it'd best to address things now before the stresses of high school and teenage years!!
