spaz?
over the last week I have felt that much has been made of my poor use of the word bitch in a thread title. I accept that I should never had used that word(an apologise for my lack of sensitivity)
But this has made me question the fact that my anger over my child who has severe cp was called this (on more than one occasion) over looked.
I have thought long and hard about posting ANYTHING about this. but as most people seem to be more upset by my wording I feel I have to.
So is it ok. Is it not hurtfull? does my child have to put up with it?. does her brother have to fight people everyday over it???

I wonder what adults with SN, esp CP think about it. Its not something any of my older kids have mentioned happening to them. But Ive noticed that some get bullied and some dont, in the same way some NT kids do and some dont. I suppose theres a lot of variants, eg personality, area, size of school etc.

I presume some schools do have policies about name calling as it can be as hurtful as physical bullying. A lot of kids use the word gay as derogatory in the same way, not to mention fat, thick, ugly etc. Schools have to educate children about the harm they are doing, but sadly I dont see it ever stopping as theyll just find some other word to use.

Very funny comedian called Adam Hall has a prosthetic leg and does a routine about how embarrassed customs people get when they realise it is his leg which has set off the security alarm, and how they are so mortified they just wave him through frantically, and he says, something like, "'I'm going, well, don't you want to search me?' and they are like, 'oh nooo, oh hell, just go, don't want to upset the spaz'" But that's a very, very different context - using the word to mock other's people's fears of a/disability and b/doing the wrong thing.
As an insult it's just crap and wrong.

um ... Gridlock ... rough memory

Its an indictment of cars

Very clever man called Geoffrey (with CP) invents a car that works without petrol and no pollution and patents it ... Corrupt govt. minister tells car industry bloke who steals patent plans and sends 2 heavies to his lab to kill him .. there's a whole skit on how the thugs don't believe that Geoffrey can be the scientist becuase of his disability which he uses to his advantage and escapes

His flat mate (he's in love with her but she's not with him) is Deborah who is in a wheelchair that Geoffrey customises .. she was run over on a pedestrian crossing

There's a lot of satirical political stuff about govt. minister losing it (slight bit of transvestism but not sexual) .. based on Thatcher's govt I reckon and Elton's attitude to them

Geoffrey gets murdered half-way through .. and Deborah in her customised wheelchair takes on the heavies

Its actually quite funny and I think a 14 year old will be fine with it .. there's no big sexual / violence themes .. well not as in blood and gore violence

HTH (very rusty was long time ago I read it)

Ian Dury did that song Spasticis Autisticus. He'd been asked (as a person with disabilities as a result of childhood polio) to write something to commemorate the Year of the Disabled. Reckoning that this was all very condescending and tokenistic, he came up with this play on Sparticus (I'm Spasticus)

It wasn't liked or used as the theme for 'Year of the Disabled'. I think it was even banned. I like it though - it has attitude and challenges perceptions of people with disabilities as being meek, needy and subjects of sympathy.
