Statementing

I have some beginners questions to ask so please forgive me if they seem silly!

DS is shortly due to be assessed by an Ed Psych and the school is talking about applying for a statement therafter (they suspect he has mild AS).

If they successfully apply for a statement, does this last for his entire school life, or does it have to be renewed?

Thanks

Hi reliant robin, my son ds1 was statemented earlier on this year. And as far as i know it get evulauated again every year. My ds2 is undergoing a statutory asessment at the minute, i havent got his proposed statement through yet. My ds1 is at mainstream and ds2 has just started a special school.

Hi Reliantrobin,

No question on here is silly.

I would seriously consider applying for this particular document yourself rather than get school to do it. This is because you know yourself it has been done then and most importantly because school do not have the right of appeal if the LEA says no (parents can appeal).

It can also take six months for such a document to be issued from the time the LEA agree (and that is if there is no disagreement over content).

The Statement is reviewed annually and is certainly looked at carefully when it comes to the transitional stage (e.g tranferring from infants to juniors or from juniors to secondary).

IPSEA are very good at all this and would suggest you read their website (www.ipsea.org.uk)

HI,

Glad you have posted this as my DS (10) has recently beem diagnosed with AS (also mild) and I am unsure of the procedure for statementing.

Sorry for barging in on your post.

Hi, can I just add that IPSEA advised me that if the schools application is turned down, although the school can't appeal the decision, the parents can actually appeal on behalf of the school, as long as it is done within 6 weeks.

Has anyone hear of thr "every child matters changes to statements,I think i understand that unless your child is deamed "Exceptionality"{25 Hours or more} The school your child attends now will have to fund the care and support? At the moment i think this is any child that has less than twenty five hours support evey school has different funding for support our local school gets £1600 because we live in a "wealthy area" Does this mean schools will start turning away some special need children or am i being a pessimist?

caroline3 · 09/12/2006 19:51

Masi, do you have any more information on this.

I get the impression that this is what is going on - does this mean the Ed Act is being changed or the guidelines? Naturally there is no publicity being given to this.... Also I note that IEPs have not been updated this term. Is this just me or is something else going on?????

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/12/2006 08:36

Hi caroline3,

"Every Child Matters" has been around for a while now. The following is its basic premise:-

The Children Act 2004 was introduced in response to recommendations made by Lord Laming in his report following the inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie in 2000. The Act is accompanied by the launch of a major document called Every Child Matters: Change for Children which details a shared programme of change to improve the outcomes for all children. We want children and young people to:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic wellbeing

I haven't come across anything directly relating to Statements unless its to look at the departments generally. No mention at all about any changes in any other regard.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/12/2006 08:37

Hi again,

If the IEP has not been updated this term I would contact the SENCO to find out when that will be done (it ought to be done really with parent in attendance).
