ABA or speech therapy

I want to get a private therapist for DS.

But I'm not sure if I should go for an ABA tutor or a more specialised speech therapist.

I really like- if you ever heard of her- Laura Mize interventions strategies. I know she's a speech therapist- but she seems quite different to other speech therapists that I know. She actually goes into DETAIL on how to get a child to talk.

Though- I do confess- I find it very hard to spend three hours one-one time therapy time with DS everyday. I find it very hard and if I must say- boring. I am breathless and tired after our sessions. Am I the only parent that feels like this? Confused but I keep going because I know this will help DS hugely.

When I started using Laura Mize strategies- they actually worked quite quicker than any other advice I got from other speech therapists.

So I don't know if I should be looking at a specialist therapist, ABA or just do it myself.

I don't know Laura mize but yes I found it wearying (and boring) doing it all myself

Salt didn't work for us at all, ABA did

Go for the most efficient and effective way of getting the best outcomes.

Don't do something for any other reason.

Aba worked for us :)

Why don't you try out both? Do some sessions with each and then decide for yourself?

How's your ds's speech now? I remember he had a few words

Hi sammy the mummy

Well he has added two new words to his vocabulary. Still very delayed though- but at least his improving.

My DS (verbal dyspraxia and ASD) has made amazing progress with lots of speech therapy, NHS and private, plus speech work at home, where the Nuffield programme was followed. Plus the NHS therapist did language work using things like colourful semantics.

Has your son has NHS speech therapy? What was that like?

Ahhhcantthinkofagoodname Yes my son was receiving speech therapy on the NHS.

It was ok, but very helpful along the way. The only issue I had was that the speech therapy sessions weren't enough at all.

I'm looking into specialised schools too. Does your DS go to a special school?

Hello, yes he goes to a mainstream primary with a speech and language unit. To our great relief, he settled no problem and is really happy. He is continuing to make good progress. We are v lucky
